Chapter 1 by Pam Rowden
Awakening
I AM HERE!
I taste ...
plastic and antiseptic:
flavours of hospitals,
healing, sickness,
cleanliness, sterility,
left behind in my mouth.
I smell ...
heated metal:
soldered connections,
the smell of construction and destruction:
metal doors, pierced by the flame of a torch;
musty air:
recycled through countless filters,
as it flows again
and again
and again
through the base;
sweat:
men who have been
working too hard,
waiting too long,
worrying so much ...
I feel ...
the roughness of the blanket beneath my hand,
the starch in the sheet beneath my arm,
the firm support of the trolley beneath me;
I will not fall.
the tackiness of the leads attached to my face and chest,
the sting of the not-really-so-long-ago burn to my hand,
a dryness in my throat:
I thirst!
a gentle, cooling breeze as the air is fanned around the room;
the heat from the burnt-out machinery beside me;
lungs filling with air,
a heart beating once again ...
I hear ...
the gentle
beep,
beep,
beep,
of the monitor
as it reminds me that I live;
the sound of your voice
as you speak my name;
and I open my eyes to see
You standing there,
waiting for me,
through the long, lonely night ...
and I know
that once again
I (really) am here.
