Chapter 1 by Marta Jadczyk
General Hammond watched as SG-1 returned from P7D-282. First Teal'C, then Daniel walked through the stargate. Finally, Colonel O'Neill emerged from the shimmering surface carrying Captain Carter who was covered with her CO's jacket. Hammond's expression changed from puzzelment to horror as with another step, the jacket shifted revealing a gaping wound in her chest.
"Medical team to the embarkation room." He barked and charged down the stairs. He entered just as O'Neill was placing Sam on the stretcher. Jack gently ran his knuckles along her cheek, straightening as General Hammond walked over to him. About to ask for an explenation, Hammond fell silent as he saw the expression in the other man's brown eyes. There was no hope there, only the deepest, darkest despair he had ever seen and George knew he was looking at a man whose very soul had been ripped from his body. A man whose life no longer held any meaning.
