Story Notes: Set: After Politics

Authors notes: Sam seemed so lost at the end of Politics and I wanted to explore what she was feeling and the events leading to 'Within the serpents grasp' Thanks to Matti for beta-ing!

God it all seemed so hopeless. Kinsley refused to believe that the Stargate program was needed and had cut off the SGC's funding. Sam didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the stupidity of the man.

If and when the Goa'uld attacked, there was no way that they would be able to fight them without the benefit of both their allies and the Stargate. None of which Kinsley was willing to believe.

Sighing, she sank down onto her bed in her quarters on the base. She hadn't had the energy to get herself home and felt the urge to be as close to the Stargate as possible, not quite ready to believe it was all over.

Silently, she began undoing the buttons on her coat before tossing it behind her and began working on her collar. It was ridiculous, here the SGC was the front line against a powerful enemy and by far the people who knew the most about them, and yet a Senator was over ruling them whom Sam suspected couldn't see past his own longing to be President.

Shaking her head, she stood up and finished changing into a pair of shorts and a tee shirt before climbing into bed. She knew it was early but she felt drained and somewhat lost. Closing her eyes, Sam willed herself not to think about it and to try and get some sleep.

The next morning Sam awoke praying that it had all been a dream, but the banging on her door was giving a pretty good indication that it hadn't been. "Hang on!" Quickly she climbed out of the bed and headed over to the door.

She wasn't surprised to find her teammates in the corridor waiting for her. "Hey." she was slightly taken aback by just how tired Colonel O'Neill and Daniel looked; she imagined that she didn't look much better. Teal'c looked as rested as he usually did just slightly more troubled, not surprising really.

"Carter, we're heading up to talk to Hammond, figured you'd wanna come with." She couldn't help but smile at the Colonel, pleased that they weren't going to give up just yet.

"Yes Sir, just give me a moment to get dressed." She couldn't help but take a bit of pleasure in the look on his face when he realised she wasn't quite in regulation uniform.

"Right. we'll ugh meet you in the commissary."

She nodded slightly before closing the door and hurriedly dressing, before rushing after her teammates.

Sam found them sat at a table in a far corner, away from the rest of the SGC personnel gloomily eating breakfast. Sitting down next to Teal'c, she tried not to drool over the cup of coffee Daniel handed her.

"We should go though the gate."

Sam glanced from her cup to Daniel and back again. "We don't know if the coordinates would be the same Daniel."

"Yes, I know that, but it's got to be better than sitting here and doing nothing hasn't it?"

"We're not going to do nothing Daniel, I'm going to talk to Hammond and we're going to come up with something." Jack rested his chin on the back of his hand and tried to think of exactly what he could say to the General to make a difference, knowing rationally that it wasn't the General who needed convincing of anything.

Sam watched Daniel sympathetically as he ran his hands though his hair, he'd already seen the world destroyed once and now it seemed that there was virtually nothing they could do to convince Kinsley just how much trouble they were in. "Daniel, it's not over yet. We won't let them win this." She squeezed his hand where it now rested on the table.

"Well, the General should be back by now, we should head up to the Control Room."

"Yes sir." Quietly they stood and headed for the Generals Office, Sam and Jack walking ahead with Daniel and Teal'c bringing up the rear.

Arriving in the control room, Jack gestured for them to wait for him while he spoke to the General. Daniel and Teal'c leaned against the control panels while Sam flopped into the chair next to them.

"Sir!" He glanced back over his shoulder at her as she gave him a slight smile. "Good luck."
