He's not romantic; she doesn't expect him to be. But he watches her six and gets her out of trouble, and that's enough for her. It's his refusal to leave anyone behind and his sense of duty that touches her heart.
The commissary has cupcakes iced with pink hearts, but she misses lunch. She finds one of these cakes in her lab, next to her computer, and she smiles. He hovers in the doorway, nodding approval when she picks the cake up and takes a bite.
She doesn't expect him to be romantic, but it doesn't mean he doesn't care.
