You once told me you loved me but, I never knew to listen. Now as I stand here, realizing that I’ll never see you again, I regret the time we could have spent together but never did. The shots ring out in honor of the life you spent in service to your country. The trumpet wails its woeful cry as the flag you defended is presented to her.

Not to me, to her.

She doesn’t shed a single tear. She doesn’t even care. She never loved you as I loved you. Although she once owned your name and although your country owned your loyalty, I was the one who owned your heart. At the trumpet’s final note of farewell, I am left standing all alone with one hand at my side and one hand at my brow in salute to you: my commander, my comrade, my everything. Fresh tears well up in my eyes.

Never shall I see your eyes imbued with life, nor flash a smile at your jokes but, most of all, I will never be able to return those words you spoke to me with your final breath.

Never can I tell you:

"I love you too."
