Sam walked away from the village feeling as if she had been kicked in the chest. “He has feelings for her,” she thought. Sam looked back at Laira and her heart lurched. Laira had her hands splayed protectively over her abdomen. Sam wanted to scream. “Oh God! They’re lovers! She’s pregnant! Or she hopes she is!” she thought. Sam glanced over at Daniel. He looked at her with concern. “Are you OK?” “I’m fine.” Sam replied. She knew Daniel didn’t buy it. “Carter, dial us out!” ordered O’Neill. The wormhole opened and the full SG-1 team returned to Earth.
When they appeared in the Gateroom, a loud cheer went up. Everyone was slapping O’Neill on the back and welcoming him home. Janet Frasier looked over at Sam. She expected Sam to be exultant! After all, she had done the impossible; she built a particle beam in three months and brought Jack O’Neill home. To Janet’s eyes, however, Sam looked as if she had lost her best friend, despondent and exhausted.
General Hammond surveyed the scene before him with concern. His best team was home intact, but there seemed to be an uncomfortable undercurrent between them. He hoped that they would regain their former cohesiveness.
Janet went over to Sam. “Come on, let’s go to the infirmary.” Sam nodded and Janet put her arm around her best friend and led her out of the Gateroom.
As the crowd began to disperse, O’Neill looked around for Carter. “Where did Carter go?” He asked Teal’c. “MajorCarter left with DoctorFrasier” replied Teal’c. Teal’c pulled O’Neill aside to a quiet corner. “I must speak with you, O’Neill. On Edora, you said that I was a “stubborn son-of-a-bitch”. I was not. MajorCarter was. She worked tirelessly to bring you home.” “Jack, Sam worked 48 hour shifts. She wouldn’t eat. Janet had to drug her coffee to get her to sleep.” said Daniel. “She would have done that for any of us,” replied O’Neill. “She would probably put in 18 hour days for the rest of us, yes. But you are different,” stated Daniel.
“And you have not thanked her for her efforts, O’Neill” said Teal’c.
And Daniel said softly, “She saw you with Laira. She knows there was something going on between the two of you.”
“In other words, I’m a jerk. Is that it?” snapped O’Neill.
“Jack, for the last three months Samantha Carter has put every ounce of her being into bringing you home. To the detriment of her health, I might add. Go look at her! She’s lost a lot of weight. She’s exhausted! What she needs from you right now is to know that her effort was appreciated! That you want to be home!” With that, Daniel stormed out.
“He is correct, O’Neill.”
Jack nodded his head, tiredly. “I know, Teal’c. I know.”

Janet helped Sam to the exam table. Sam was doing a good imitation of a zombie. Janet put her arms around Sam and said, softly. “What happened, Sam? What’s wrong?” Sam started to cry. “He found someone there. I heard him tell her he didn’t want to leave.” “Oh, honey, I’m sorry! Shhhh, it’ll be all right!” Janet held Sam and stroked her hair as if she were a small child. Sam sobbed uncontrollably. Inside, Janet cursed Jack O’Neill for hurting Sam so badly. Janet knew that deep inside Sam was in love with Jack, even if she was not willing to admit it to herself yet. If Janet had doubted it, the doubt had been erased over the last three months. Janet had also been willing to bet that the feelings were reciprocated. Whenever Sam was injured, Jack was beside himself with worry. And Janet really did enjoy the little green monster of jealousy that appeared in Jack whenever Sam was around Martouf.
Slowly, the sobs subsided. Janet realized Sam had cried herself to sleep. Slowly, gently, she lowered Sam onto the exam table and covered her up. She put up the railings. Sleep was Sam’s greatest need right now.
Nurse Cooper came in. “Dr. Fraiser, Daniel Jackson is in the other exam room for his post-mission exam.”
“Thank you.”
Janet went in to the exam room and shut the door. “Daniel, what in the hell happened?!?!” “How is Sam doing?” “Not well! She cried herself to sleep. God knows she needs it!” Daniel sighed. “He gave up on us, Janet. I don’t think he could believe that we would be able to bring him home.” “Didn’t he realize Sam would move heaven and earth to get him back?” “Janet, the gate was buried 30 feet deep. Given the desolation of the impact zone, it’s amazing that it did survive the meteor strike. Any rational person would have believed it was destroyed. Sam is always trying to make him understand how far away these planets are from Earth.” Daniel shook his head. He was no longer angry with Jack. He was just worried about how his friends were going to make it through this. “Sam said he found someone there.” “Laira, the one who seems to be the village leader. Sam heard him tell her he was not happy about going home. They hugged. When we walked away, Sam and I looked back. Laira was holding her hands against her stomach, caressing it.” “Oh no!” “Yeah, that gesture is universal. She’s pregnant, or hopes she is.” “Sam saw that? No wonder she’s so upset.” “You know she’s in love with him.” “Daniel, I don’t think there is anyone on this base who doesn’t believe she’s in love with him. No one would say anything, of course. We’re going to have to be there for her. She’s going to need all the friends she has.”
Janet began Daniel’s exam. She quickly and efficiently collected his vital signs, drew blood samples, and performed his physical exam. “I wonder if he ever thinks of me as more than just his doctor,” she sighed to herself. Janet admitted to herself some time ago that she had feelings for Daniel. She had known that while Daniel searched for Sha’re, nothing could come of it. Sha’re had died, but it was still too soon for Daniel to contemplate a relationship with someone else. “Ok, Daniel. You’re good to go.” “Thanks, Janet.” Daniel hopped off the exam table and put on his T-shirt. He walked over to where Janet was writing in the chart. “Janet,” he said, reaching out to touch her shoulder. “Take care of Sam for us. She’ll tell you more than she will the rest of us.” Janet sighed, “You know I will.” Daniel smiled as they looked at each other. “Thanks,” he said, gently kissing her on the forehead. Daniel then turned and left the room. Janet stood there. Wondering.
Teal’c entered the room. “DoctorFrasier, are you ready to perform my exam?” “Yes, Teal’c. Please get on the table.” Janet completed his examination. “DoctorFrasier, how is MajorCarter?” “She’s sleeping right now. That’s what she needs the most.” “I am concerned about her,” he paused. “I spoke to O’Neill. I “chewed him out” regarding his treatment of MajorCarter.” “Did he pay attention to what you said?” “Yes. I believe he did.” “Thanks Teal’c. You’re free to go.” Teal’c bowed his head to Janet and left.
Janet decided to check on Sam in the other exam room. She had turned out the lights when she left so she did not see Jack immediately. He was sitting on one of the tall stools, on the opposite side of the bed. He was holding Sam’s hand. Janet wasn’t sure but she thought she saw Jack wipe away a tear. Janet quietly moved to Sam’s side. Softly, she whispered, “Jack, she needs her sleep. And I need to examine you.”
Janet was glad that there had been space between them when she first saw Jack. Her first impulse was to deck him. The military frowns on striking a superior officer. While Janet was not under O’Neill’s command, he did outrank her.
Jack silently stood and released Sam’s hand, caressing it as he returned it to the bed.
They went into the next exam room. Janet motioned for Jack to get on the exam table. There was a palpable tension in the room. Janet started to record Jack’s vital signs. Jack finally broke the silence. “Janet, Carter looks ...” “Like Hell?” “Yeah.” “No kidding! Jack O’Neill, that woman went through Hell and back trying to get you home!! I’ve checked the computer logs! She worked more 48 and 72-hour shifts than should be humanly possible. She only slept when I put Valium in her coffee. And no, I didn’t wait for General Hammond’s orders to do that. I tried to keep food down her, but half of the time her nerves were so wound up, she was in the head throwing the food back up. She’s lost 20 pounds she didn’t have to lose.”
Janet stopped and looked at him. Jack’s head was down, looking at his hands clasped in his lap. “Jack, you should have believed in her.” “I tried,” he said quietly. “I couldn’t find the ‘gate. I knew it would probably be years before a ship could get to me, if one could get to me. I waited. But after a hundred days, I finally gave up. I reconciled myself to living on Edora the rest of my life.” “And started a life with someone else,” Janet stated. “Yes.” “And Sam reached you on the one hundred and first day.” Janet went on, “She heard you tell Laira that you weren’t happy to go home. She knows the two of you are lovers.” Jack winced. “Sam and I have never discussed her feelings for you. I’m fairly sure of how you FELT about her. And, I’m aware those feelings are against regulations. I know the two of you have never stepped over the line. But, if you want to mend your relationship with her, you better do some serious groveling and apologizing.” Janet turned away from Jack. “Janet, I’ll try my hardest to make it up to her. I really didn’t intend to hurt her,” said Jack.
“OK. Well, the good news is that you are in the best shape you’ve been in for a long time.”
Jack laughed. “It’s amazing what chopping wood every day and building a few houses can do for you. Janet, can I go back and sit with Sam? I want to be there when she wakes up.”
“Sure, but she may sleep another 10 to 12 hours. She’s really beat.”
“I know, but that’s ok. I have to do my debriefing, but General Hammond said I could have a week’s leave after that.”
***************
Samantha Carter sighed and slowly stretched out completely. She was still sleepy and was wondering what the strange weight was across her mid-section. She opened her eyes and was startled to see a man’s arm lying across her body. She looked to her right and saw Jack lying on a gurney next to her. He gently brushed aside a lock of her hair. “Hi, how are you feeling?” Sam stretched again and turned to the right to look at Jack. “Better. How long have I been asleep?” Jack glanced up at the clock. “About 16 hours.” “Oh.” “Sam, you know I’m not very good with words or saying how I feel, but thank you for getting me home. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I guess, in a way, I was in shock. It was so long and I finally resigned myself to never coming home .. never seeing you again. I made that mental and emotional break. I just didn’t know how to react. I should have hung in longer but it seemed so impossible.” Jack sighed. “I never meant to hurt you, Sam. You have to believe that. You shouldn’t have put yourself through so much.”
“I had to get you home. It was worth it. After seeing the impact site, I can understand how you lost hope. I’m just glad you’re here.”
Jack smiled, got off the gurney and moved it away from the exam table. He held out his hand. “How about some breakfast? My treat.” Sam took his hand and got down from the table. “At the commissary?” “No way!” Jack laughed. “We’re going for something good. I want the biggest breakfast Cracker Barrel has!” “Ok, you’re on!” Sam said, laughing herself.
As they walked out of the main entrance to Cheyenne Mountain, they passed Janet Fraiser. “We’re going to breakfast.” Sam told Janet. “Great. But I need you back here afterwards. I still need to do your post-mission exam.” “OK. I’ll see you later.” Sam and Jack walked away towards her car. Janet looked after them, smiling to herself. “It looks like they got things resolved,” Janet thought to herself. As Janet got to the infirmary, Daniel came out of the door. “Janet, have you seen Sam?” Daniel asked with concern. “Yes, I sure have! Jack and Sam left to have breakfast. She’ll be back afterwards.” A huge smile broke out on Daniel’s face. “Great! Hey Janet, how about going to breakfast with me? I’m buying!” Janet smiled. “It’ll have to be the commissary. I’m on duty in a half hour.” “No problem!” As they walked down the hall, Janet’s smile became as big as Daniel’s when he draped his arm across her shoulders. She put her arm around Daniel’s waist. He smiled down to her and gave her a small hug.
____
“Breakfast was great. As far as Sam, well, I think we’re going to be ok. I was there when she woke up this morning and I apologized.” Quietly he said, “Daniel, I went to the infirmary last night to see her. She was asleep. She looked so tired, so fragile. I never really thought of Sam as fragile before. She’s always so tough, so competent, such a good soldier.” Daniel shook his head. “No. She never wants anyone to think of her that way, but she’s only human. Sometimes we all reach the breaking point.” “Yeah.” Puzzled, Jack said, “How did you know we went to breakfast together?” “Janet told me. We had breakfast together, too. Unfortunately it was here. She had to go on duty.” “Janet’s a good lady, Daniel. Why don’t you take her out some evening?” “We’re going out tonight. I’ve got to admit I’m a little nervous. It will be my first date in years.” Daniel frowned. “What’s wrong, Daniel?” “I guess I’m feeling a little guilty. I mean, Sha’re has only been dead a few months. But when I put my arm around Janet’s shoulders this morning, it just felt so good, so right, somehow. I kept watching her at breakfast. I never realized before just how beautiful she is … how kind, caring, gentle.” Jack shook his head. “Don’t feel guilty, Daniel. Sha’re always wanted you to be happy, didn’t she? She wouldn’t want you to remain alone and lonely because of her. You’re a good man, Daniel. You deserve some happiness. And, if my two cents count for anything, I say go for it. Life is just too short, especially in our business.” Daniel smiled, “That’s good advice, Jack. I just hope you take it before it’s too late, too.” Jack smiled ruefully, “Yeah, well.” “Oh, I wanted to thank you for taking care of the house and bills and stuff.” “No problem.” Daniel replied. “It’s a good thing we set up those Powers of Attorney. It came in handy.” O’Neill got up and clapped Daniel on the shoulder. “I’m going to go home and sleep in a real bed and I think I’ll take a four hour bath.” Jack laughed. “God, I’ve missed that! See ya later, Daniel” “’Bye, Jack. Enjoy!”

SG-1 were in Hammond’s office waiting for the briefing on a new assignment that had just come up.
Sam reflected on the last six months. It had been a little rocky at times, especially with Jack’s Black Op’s “retirement” situation. Sam had to admit that she still felt the hurt of his request to retire on Edora. She knew that it had all been part of the cover, but that little ache still remained. Other than that, Jack and Sam’s relationship had returned to the easy comfort of being together with the team, the teasing banter back and forth. Things were going well for Daniel and Janet, too. They had become very close, especially after Daniel’s appendectomy. Sam suspected that it had given them the opportunity to really talk, to really discover how they felt. Daniel had become a fixture at Janet’s house. Cassie had taken Daniel as the father figure in her life and Daniel was enjoying it to the hilt. Sam knew that nothing had happened between Daniel and Janet physically. Janet wanted to set a good example for her daughter. That didn’t mean it was easy, however. Just last week Janet was bemoaning how hard it was to not have Daniel spend the night. Daniel, being the man he was, understood and appreciated what Janet was trying to do. Sam knew it wasn’t easy for him either.
General Hammond came into the office. “People, there has been a request that SG-1 attend the treaty signing on Edora. You will attend the signing ceremony and the party afterwards. You leave in one hour and will return tomorrow so prepare accordingly. Are there any questions?” Hammond looked around the table. He was aware that the tension level in the room increased a hundred-fold the moment the word “Edora” left his lips. Major Carter and Colonel O’Neill were both looking at their hands. Dr. Jackson was looking at Major Carter with concern. Hammond thought that he even detected a slight disturbance to Teal’c’s normally imperturbable demeanor. Major Carter’s voice said softly, “All of us, sir?” “Yes, Major. In fact, it has been requested that you and a representative of the Tok’ra work together to come up with an ecologically sound way to mine and refine the Naquadah. It is part of the treaty. Are there any other questions?” Silence reigned supreme. “Dismissed.”
Sam went down to the infirmary. “Janet, we’re being sent to Edora! What am I going to do?” “I just found out. The general called me.” Janet shook her head. “I’ve told you, you needed to deal with the situation with Laira. You have no choice, now.” “I know. I just don’t know how I’m going to handle it.” Janet hugged her best friend. “Wait and see how everything turns out. Just stay calm.” “Thanks, Janet.” Sam gave her a weak, little smile. Daniel came through the door, a big smile on his face. “Honey, I’m out of allergy pills again!” Janet laughed. “When aren’t you?!” She went over to the medicine cabinet and got his pills. “Just take care of yourself, Ok?” Daniel enfolded her in his arms and kissed her gently, then with increasing passion.
Sam looked away, slightly jealous. She was happy for them, of course, but she was envious as well. She wanted the chance for that kind of relationship. “I love you.” “I love you, too.” Daniel looked over at Sam. “You’d better get a move on.” He went over and hugged Sam. “Don’t worry. You can lean on me if you need to.” Sam hugged him back. “Thanks, Daniel.” Daniel turned and walked out of the room, blowing a kiss to Janet as he left. Janet looked after him, love and desire reflected in her eyes. Sam laughed softly, “You guys need to make this legal before you drive each other nuts.” Janet smiled, “Yeah, I know.” She looked over at Sam. “We’ve been talking about it.” “You have! Well?!?” “He hasn’t asked yet but I’m hoping he will soon.” “And?” “I’m going to insist on a very short engagement,” giggled Janet. Sam laughed. “You’d better let me know the instant it happens. I’ve gotta get going.” “Have a good trip, Sam. No matter what, you can handle it.”
SG-1 stood in the Gateroom as the last chevron locked and the wormhole formed. “Well kids, let’s get this over with.” Jack said tightly. They walked through the Stargate. When they reached Edora, Garan, Paynan, and Jacob Carter were there to greet them. “Daddy!” Sam cried and went over to hug her father. “Jacob, Garan, Paynan, how are you doing?” said Jack. Paynan said, “We’re fine, O’Neill. Glad to see you back. Preparations are underway for the signing. Jack glanced over at Sam and said softly, “Where’s Laira?” “Mom’s resting before the signing ceremony,” replied Garan. Sam was looking down at the ground. Jacob hugged her and whispered in her ear, “You can do this.” Sam nodded and followed the rest of them to the village. The members of the village who had stayed during the meteor shower greeted O’Neill warmly. Those who had been stranded on Earth greeted the rest of SG-1 as warmly. Sam was pleased that one of the women had named her new baby girl Samantha. Sam sat at one of the outdoor tables that had been set up and held the baby. Little Sam smiled up at her and held her finger tightly. Sam cradled the baby a little closer to her and smiled and sang softly to her.
Sam had never really wanted to think about children; especially after Jolinar and the way her body chemistry had been altered. But now, as she sat holding this beautiful baby, she knew she wanted one of her own. Jack’s baby. Involuntarily, her eyes sought him out. He was standing at the other side of the village square with her father. She realized Jack had been watching her holding the baby. She smiled at them. Jack had been keeping his eye on her the whole time but when she held the baby he stood still and just watched her. He wondered what it would be like to see Sam heavy with their child; holding their child like that. Jacob walked over to him, silently considering the look on Jack’s face. She’s beautiful, isn’t she, Jack?” O’Neill could only nod his head. “I have one thing to say to you. Don’t hurt her. If you do, there WILL be Hell to pay.” “Yes, sir.” Jack said.
Bells rang to gather everyone to the signing ceremony. Colonel Johnson of SG-14 had negotiated the treaty and would sign on behalf of the U. S. Government. Laira came out of her house and Sam’s heart fell to the dirt. Laira was quite obviously six months pregnant. Daniel went over to Sam and held her hand. Sam grabbed it like a lifeline, almost crushing it in her grip. Daniel never realized Sam was so strong but he gritted his teeth and said nothing.
On the other side of the clearing, Jack paled. Jacob whispered, “You didn’t know, did you?” Jack just shook his head. His heart sank. He knew what he had to do.
As soon as the signing ceremony was over Sam left the village, waving Daniel away. She had to be alone. She found herself at the bank of the river. There was a canoe tied up nearby and some fishing poles and nets. Sam sat upon a large rock that was there, buried her face in her hands and started crying. She knew what Jack would do. He was an honorable man. He would ask Laira to marry him. After about twenty minutes, Sam’s sobbing subsided. Sam hurriedly wiped the tears away when she heard footsteps on the path. For her own self-respect she had to become the strong, capable Major Carter. She would hide forever the broken-hearted Samantha Carter.
A voice said softly, “Funny, this is where he would come every day after work. It was Jack’s special place.” Sam’s heart froze. Laira carefully sat down on the bank beside Sam. “When is the wedding?” Sam said evenly, not really believing that actually came out of her mouth. “There is not going to be a wedding, Samantha. You are correct, he did ask me to marry him but I refused.” “Why?” asked Sam in disbelief. “Because he does not belong in my world and I do not belong in his. He belongs with SG-1.” She paused. “He belongs with you. He belongs TO you.” Sam looked at Laira with confusion evident in her face. “What do you mean?” “I was watching you today from the window during the preparations. I saw how you looked at him and I saw how he looked at you, especially when you were holding little Samantha. It only confirmed what I felt during his stay here. He stayed in my house for three months. At night, when I was in my bed, I could hear him in the next room, calling your name in his sleep. I had been alone for a long time and Jack was the first man that I had feelings for since Garan’s father died. I figured he cared for you but I thought that we could build a life together as long as he was stranded here. That last night I saw that he had finally lost hope for a rescue. I was hoping for a chance for us to find happiness. We came home from the party, I went up to him, kissed him, asked him to give me a child.” “I don’t want to hear this!” Sam snapped. Laira put her hand on Sam’s arm, restraining her. “Yes, you do.” Laira paused, “I did not ask for his love, only for a child. I had always wanted more children and it had been so long since I had been with a man. Yes, we made love. He was so tender and gentle, but I knew I would never have his heart when he called out your name.” “Oh. Ouch.” Sam grimaced. “Yes. He had a lot to drink at the party. He didn’t realize that he called out your name. I never told him. But you need to know. He loves you. You hold his heart in your hands and I can see he holds yours.” Sam looked at the river. “Yes.” she said slowly. Laira smiled. “You’ve never admitted that out loud before, have you?” Sam shook her head. “Why haven’t you told each other?” “Military regulations don’t allow us to be together,” replied Sam. “One of us would have to leave the team or the Air Force. I don’t think either one of us has the strength to do that. I can’t imagine being in the SGC without Jack. I don’t want to leave and have him go offworld without me. You know how he gets into trouble. I have to be there to get him out.”
Laira laughed. “Yes, he told me some stories.” She looked at Sam. “Given your “regulations” I don’t know how it will be done, but I am certain that you will be this child’s stepmother one day. You know Jack will want to visit him.” “Yes. Jack will want the best possible relationship with his child.” “That is why I do not want you to worry, Samantha. I want Jack to be happy. You are the only one who has the ability to do that. I will never stand in your way.” “Thank you, Laira.”
They looked out over the river. Laira started giggling. “What?” said Sam, looking over at her. “Did Jack ever tell you what happened when he was helping to build Yselle’s house?” “No, what happened?” Laira proceeded to tell her the story.
********
That was how Daniel and Jack found them about an hour later.
Sam and Laira were lying on the ground, talking, looking up at the clouds. Daniel leaned over and whispered to Jack. “Uh oh, you know it’s never good when your ex and your girlfriend get together and talk. Boy, are you in trouble!” “Daniel! Carter is not my girlfriend.” Daniel laughed, “Yeah! Right!” “Carter! We’ve been looking for you.” “Sorry, sir. We were just talking.” “Well, the dinner is just about ready.” “OK, sir.” Sam got up and she and Jack helped Laira up. Laira groaned and rubbed her back. Sam, Jack and Daniel looked at her with concern. Sam turned to Daniel. “Why don’t you go back to the SGC and get Janet to come and give Laira a check-up?” “Good idea! She can come for the dinner celebration too! Cassie is at Janet’s mom’s this week.” Daniel left, grinning from ear to ear. Laira smiled. “Why do I get the idea that you just made his day?” Jack laughed, “Because she did. It is a good idea though. I would like for Dr. Frasier to start giving you regular prenatal check-ups. It would ease my mind a lot.” They started the return trip to the village.
Jacob was watching for Sam and was surprised and amused to see Sam and Laira walking together talking animatedly, while Jack O’Neill trailed behind looking sort of stunned and confused. Selmac laughed. “Jacob, I think Samantha is going to be all right. However, I’m not so sure about Colonel O’Neill.” Jacob chuckled, “He looks like a deer caught in the headlights.”
The dinner went well. Daniel and Janet only had eyes for each other. Laira nodded her head over in their direction. Sam smiled and nodded. “I think I saw a small box in Daniel’s pocket.” Sam whispered to Laira. “A small box?” “An engagement ring.” “Oh! No wonder he looks so happy today!” Janet came over to where they were sitting. “Laira, do you want to do the exam now?” A small wave of fear came over Laira’s face. “Samantha, could you come with me? I’d feel better if you were there.” Sam smiled, “Sure, let’s go.” They started walking over to Laira’s house. Janet walked behind them in stunned amazement. Daniel had told her about how Sam had reacted when she saw Laira. He also had told her how he and Jack had found them. Janet just had not expected that Laira and Sam would be acting like long lost friends.
When they got into the house, Sam lit the lanterns and closed the curtains. Janet put a sterile pad on the table and they helped Laira up.
Janet explained everything she was going to do. Laira held tightly to Sam’s hand. After the exam was over, Janet asked Laira if she would like to hear the baby’s heartbeat. “Yes!” Janet got out the conducting gel and the Doppler microphone. She moved it over Laira’s abdomen until she found the heartbeat. “That’s what it really sounds like!?” exclaimed Laira and Sam in unison. “Yep, that’s it!” Janet said, grinning. “That’s awesome!” said Sam. “Yes!” said Laira.
“Laira, I would like you to come to the SGC next week. I would like to perform an amniocentesis given your and Jack’s ages.” Janet said. “What is an amniocentesis?” asked Laira. “It is a diagnostic test. An ultrasound is used to show where the baby is in the womb. Then a long needle is inserted in your abdomen away from the baby and a little of the amniotic fluid is drawn off to perform genetic testing. When the parents are over 35, the chance of birth defects increases. This test would let us check and make sure that everything is all right. It would also let us know the sex of the baby.” “Is this really necessary?” “It’s not absolutely necessary but I do think it is advisable.” “Sam, what do you think?” asked Laira. “Well I’ve had some friends that had it done and while they didn’t enjoy the procedure itself, they were glad when the found out the results. It eased a lot of their worries. And Janet is one of the best doctors ever.” “Thanks for that vote of confidence, Sam! Remind me to hire you as my public relations person.” Janet laughed. “Ok. I’ll do the test.” said Laira. “I’ll come get you and bring you back, ok?” asked Sam. “That would be good.” replied Laira. “Ok, let’s get you off the table.” Sam and Janet helped Laira off the table. “If you don’t mind, I think I’m going to go lay down. I’m getting really tired.” said Laira. “Sam, you and Janet can spend the night here in Garan’s bed if you want. He’s going to stay over at Paynan’s tonight.” Sam and Janet nodded. “Sure, we’d love to. Go get some sleep, Laira.” said Sam.
Laira went on to her room and Sam and Janet walked out of the house.
Janet shook her head. “The one thing I did not expect was to find you and Laira acting like long lost sisters. What happened?” Sam sighed. “I have to admit when she walked out of the house and I saw she was pregnant, I truly hated her guts. My heart broke into a million pieces because I knew Jack would ask her to marry him. I fled to the riverbank, ironically, to Jack’s favorite spot. She found me there a while later.” Sam told Janet of the conversation she had with Laira. Janet winced when Sam described Jack calling her name while making love to Laira. “As we continued talking, I realized we were a lot alike. And Laira has such a kind and gentle manner that my anger just melted away. I didn’t expect it either, but I really like Laira.”
Janet just shook her head. “Sam, sometimes you really amaze me.”
Sam laughed, “Well, why don’t you find that boyfriend of yours? I’m sure he’s pining away for you. I’m going to find my dad.”
Janet giggled. “Yeah, I wonder what kind of trouble Daniel is into.”
“Oh God! Janet, don’t say that! Daniel attracts trouble like a magnet. I’ll see you later.”
Sam walked over to where her father was. Jacob’s eyes glowed. “How are you doing, Samantha? How is Laira?”
_________
“I’m fine Selmac. Laira decided to go lay down. She’s pretty tired. Janet said she’s doing fine. We got to hear the baby’s heartbeat.” “A wonderful experience. Some of your father’s fondest memories are from when your mother was carrying you and your brother.” “You know Dad will be irritated by you spilling the beans.” “That is the problem with males. They never understand a female’s need to know those things.” Sam chuckled. “I like Dad getting the feminine viewpoint from you. You keep him on his toes.” Jacob’s eyes closed and his head lowered. He opened his eyes again. “Watch it, kid.” “Oh come on, Dad.” Jacob’s face grew serious. “How are you really, Sammie?” Sam smiled at the pet name. “I really am fine Dad. I don’t fully understand how it happened but I really like Laira, strange as it seems.” “You really do love Jack O’Neill, don’t you?” “Dad!” “I’m not talking as an Air Force General. That doesn’t count between us. I’m talking as your father, who believe it or not, loves and worries about you.” “I know, Dad.” Sam sighed and tears started to well up in her eyes. “Oh Dad! I love him so much. It hurts not being able to be with him.” “You two have never talked about it?” “You know we can’t Dad. You know the regulations as well as I do. We are not about to risk that.” “It just seems that O’Neill has never cared much for regulations. I wasn’t sure.” “I think we’re both afraid that even if we just talk about it, we won’t be able to stop there.” Jacob hugged his daughter. “Just do what’s right for you, Sammie. I’ll do whatever I can to help.” “Thanks, Daddy.”
Jacob looked up and grinned. “Hey, what’s going on over there?” He pointed to a tree on the other side of the square. Janet and Daniel were standing beneath it, kissing. Sam looked at them and smiled. Daniel looked down at Janet, smiled, held her left hand and got down on one knee. “My God! He’s gonna do it. All right!” Sam said with glee. Suddenly a loud “Yes!” echoed across the square. Daniel stood up and spun Janet around in his arms.
Jack O’Neill and Teal’c came up beside Sam. “Did Space Monkey just do what I think he did?” “You betcha,” replied Sam, using one of Jack’s favorite expressions. Teal’c smiled, “It is about time that DanielJackson and DoctorFraiser stopped beating about the foliage and decided to wed.” Jacob laughed. “It’s “beating around the bush” Teal’c.” “Indeed. I shall endeavor to remember that fact.”
Daniel and Janet came over to the rest of their team. Sam said, “Ok Janet, let me see the rock.” Janet held out her hand, beaming. Sam gasped. On her finger was a gorgeous 4-carat diamond in a platinum mount. “Janet, I have one request.” “What’s that, Sam?” “Don’t go swimming with that thing on. I don’t want to have to find a new doctor!” Sam swept her best friend into a huge hug. “I am so happy for you!” Daniel was getting his back pounded by Jacob, O’Neill and Teal’c. Of course, Teal’c’s hurt worst. “Ok, ok. Lay off guys!!” “It’s about time, Space Monkey.” “Have you decided on a wedding date, DanielJackson?” “Not yet, but it will be pretty soon.”
Janet looked up at Jacob Carter. “General, I” “Jacob, please.” Janet nodded, “Jacob, I would appreciate it if you and General Hammond would give me away.” Jacob smiled. To Sam’s surprise, tears filled his eyes. “Janet, I would be honored to give you away, and I know George will be as well.” Jacob embraced her and kissed the top of her head. “Janet, never forget, for now and for always you are part of our family. You are as close to Sam as any sister could be. I always wanted more daughters!” Sam smiled, tears in her eyes as well. Jacob turned to Daniel. “Young man, you better take good care of her or you will have me to answer to!”
Daniel swallowed nervously, “Yes Sir! I sure will, Sir!” “Good man! OK! Let’s celebrate!!!”
“Just stay away from that hooch that Paynan makes or you’ll think you have four heads tomorrow, each one of them more painful than the others,” said O’Neill rubbing his head in remembrance. The rest of them laughed.
The next morning Jacob, Selmac and Sam started to outline ideas for the mining and refining operations. Sam was going to go back with SG-1 after lunch, obtain the information and equipment she needed and then was going to return the next day.
Just before lunchtime the team started to assemble at the tables on the square. Daniel definitely looked a little worse for wear. The Edorans had been overjoyed to hear of Daniel and Janet’s engagement and there were multiple toasts to the happy couple. Jack had not exaggerated the effect of Paynan’s home brew. Daniel passed out after the fourth toast. Jacob and Jack carried him in to Paynan’s house to sleep it off, laughing all the way.
SG-1 ate lunch with Laira, Garan, Paynan and some of the other villagers. Finally, O’Neill stood up. “It’s time to go, kids.” Everyone got up from the tables. Jack went over to Laira and took her hands in his. “I’ll come back as often as I can. Janet will give you regular prenatal check-ups.” He touched her cheek. “Take care of yourself and the baby.” “I will. You don’t have to worry. We will be just fine.” Janet and Sam went over to Laira as well. “I want to do the amniocentesis a week from today. Sam will come and get you. You’ll get the results on our first visit after that. Take care and get plenty of rest.” “I will, Janet. Thank you.” Laira turned to Sam. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Samantha.” They hugged. Sam turned to Jacob. “Are you going to see us off, Dad?” “Sure.” As they walked to the Stargate, Jacob took his daughter’s hand. “Sammie, I always knew you were special. Now I know that you are one Hell of a lady. Not many women could have handled this situation with the grace and kindness you’ve shown. I’m very proud of you.” “Thank you, Daddy,” Sam replied softly, hugging her father. Jacob smiled at her. “Everything will be OK. O’Neill called out, “Carter, dial us home!” “Yes, sir!”
When they got through the Stargate, General Hammond was waiting for them. Before he could utter a word, three voices said, “General, could I speak to you, please?” Daniel, Janet and Jack looked at each other. Jack waived his hand, “You guys go first.” They all followed General Hammond back to his office. He sat down at his desk and motioned for Daniel and Janet to be seated. Hammond caught a flash of light from Janet’s left hand as she sat down. He started to smile. “What’s on your minds?” Daniel cleared his throat. “Sir, I need to inform you that I have asked Janet to marry me and she’s accepted.” Hammond’s face broke into a huge smile. “Son, it’s about time! I thought you were never going to get around to it! Congratulations!” “Thank you, sir.” Janet spoke up. “Sir, if it would be all right, I would like for you and Jacob Carter to give me away.” “My dear, you have no idea what this means to me. I would be honored.” Janet smiled. “Thank you, sir. If you don’t mind, sir, we would like to go pick up Cassie and tell her.” “Not at all, Doctor. Dismissed.” After Daniel and Janet left, Jack walked into the office. “What do you need, Colonel?” “Sir, I need to talk to you about the Edorans. Um, one Edoran, Laira.” “The treaty signing went well, didn’t it?” “Oh, yes sir. It’s nothing about the treaty. Sir, when I got there, I found out that Laira is six months pregnant. Um, it’s my child, sir.” “Yes, I know. I approved Dr. Frasier’s trip to Edora. I had to know the reason why it was necessary. How is this situation going to be handled?” “I asked her to marry me, sir. She refused. She intends to raise the baby alone, there on Edora. Garan and Paynan will be there to help her, of course. I would like to be able to visit as often as possible, sir. I would also like to request that Dr. Frasier be allowed to give her regular prenatal check-ups, sir.” Hammond nodded. “I think that can be arranged, after all, she is one of the leaders on that planet.” Hammond cleared his throat and looked closely at O’Neill. “How has Major Carter taken these developments?” Neither O’Neill nor Carter had admitted their feelings for each other, but Hammond wasn’t stupid. It didn’t take an astrophysicist to realize that they were in love with each other. Hammond had realized it, long before Carter and O’Neill had themselves. He had decided to do nothing about it unless it started causing problems with their work.
O’Neill shook his head, a mixture of confusion and disbelief on his face. “They’ve become fast friends, sir. When you watch them, it’s like they’ve been friends for years.” Hammond chuckled. “Good, I’m glad to hear there won’t be any problems. If there is nothing else, you’re dismissed, Colonel.” “Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.” With that, Jack left the office. Hammond shook his head. Life with SG-1 was never boring!
Sam spent the next four days on Edora. She, Jacob and Selmac worked out the logistics of the Naquadah production facility in record time. When she wasn’t working with Jacob, Sam could be found down by the river talking with Laira. Laira told Sam about Jack’s experiences on Edora. Sam described her struggles to bring Jack home. They talked about their childhoods and their parents. Jacob found them there one evening. Laira was holding Samantha in her arms, comforting her. Samantha was crying about her mother. Jacob backed away, not wanting to disturb them and upset Sam further. He shook his head. Sam always tried to be so strong and never show how much her mother’s loss still hurt. He wished that she would open up to him about it. Selmac said, “Jacob, she doesn’t want you to think she blames you for her mother’s death.” “I know, Selmac. Hell, I still blame myself for not picking her up that night. If I had, she wouldn’t have died.” “You don’t know that, Jacob. For all you know, the accident might still have happened and Samantha could have lost both of her parents.” “Yes, you’re right but it doesn’t make it any easier. It hurts to see Samantha still in so much pain, 21 years later.” “Yes, it does. But I think this time with Laira may help her, may let her heal somewhat. She’s always felt she had to be strong for everyone else. Laira never really knew that Sam, never really knew “Major Samantha Carter”. Laira got to know Samantha Carter, the person. Samantha doesn’t have to be strong for her.” Slowly, Jacob nodded his head. “Yes, you may be right, Selmac.”
On the fourth day, Laira and Jacob walked with Sam back to the Stargate. “Sammie, when you come back, I won’t be here. I have to go back to Vorash tomorrow. The Tok’ra have some other assignments for me.” He kissed his daughter. “Take care of yourself, honey.” “I will, Dad. You take care too. Selmac, will you keep him out of trouble?” Selmac laughed, “As much as I possibly can, Samantha.” Sam turned to Laira. “I’ll see you in three days, OK?” Laira hugged her. “I’ll be waiting. I’m looking forward to seeing your world.” Jacob activated the Stargate. Sam gave him a last hug and walked into the ‘gate. Jacob and Laira turned back to the village. Halfway back, Laira said, “Jacob, you’re an important man in your military. Isn’t there something you can do to help Jack and Samantha? She loves him so much.” “I know she does. I don’t know yet how to help them, but I will try.” He paused. “Laira … I appreciate the friend you’ve become to my daughter. I’ll admit I don’t really understand how it happened given the circumstances. She’s confiding things to you that I doubt she’s told anyone else.” “Her feelings on her mother’s death?” “Yes.” “Well, Jacob. I have to admit I don’t understand how we became friends either. I was jealous of Jack’s feelings for her. Although I know that telling him no when he asked me to marry him was the right thing to do, it doesn’t mean it was easy. I do love Jack. Not as the grand passion of my life, no. He is in Samantha’s life. My grand passion was Garan’s father Malek. He always will be. But I love Jack and I love this child we made. But I knew he loved Sam and I could see how much she loved him. I knew it was right that they be together and I knew that I was the only one who could explain it properly to Samantha. When we talked, it was like we were opposite sides of the same cloth. We just came together. That’s the only way I can explain it.” They stopped at Laira’s door. Jacob took Laira in his arms. “Thank you, my dear, for trying to ensure my daughter’s happiness. It means so much to me.” Laira smiled at Jacob. “You and your daughter have come to mean a lot to me. I know you have to leave tomorrow but will you be coming back soon? You are always welcome here.” “Thank you. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Jacob turned and walked to Paynan’s house.
Sam brought Laira through the Stargate three days later. General Hammond was waiting at the foot of the ramp. “General Hammond, may I present Laira of Edora. Laira, may I present General George Hammond.” “Laira, I am honored to have you here.” “General Hammond, it is a pleasure to meet you. Samantha and Jack have spoken of you often, with great respect.” “Thank you. Shall we go to the infirmary? Dr. Frasier is waiting.” The General offered his arm to Laira and then led the way.
Laira had to agree with Samantha’s friends. She had not enjoyed the procedure. It really irritated her when Janet kept telling her to relax. Finally, she lost her temper and said, “RIGHT. Have someone stick a four inch needle into YOUR stomach and see how well YOU’RE able to relax!!!!” Janet chuckled and said, “Yes, I see your point but it really will help if you relax your stomach muscles.” Laira rested in the infirmary for a couple of hours and took a short nap. Sam was going to show her the sights in the afternoon.
Laira had to admit that she was amazed by the technology of the Tau’ri. Sam had already given her a tour of Cheyenne Mountain. Now they were going to Sam’s apartment. The view from the winding road was spectacular. Up ahead, Laira saw a large house with a sign out front. “Samantha, what is that?” “Oh, that house just went up for sale this week. Isn’t it lovely?” “Could we stop for a minute and look at it?” Sam shrugged, “Sure, why?” “I don’t know. I just want to look at it.” They pulled into the driveway. An older man was working in the yard and straightened as they came over. “Hi, can I help you ladies?” “We were wondering if we could look around the house,” said Sam. “It is a lovely home. Why are you leaving it?” Laira asked. “I’m retiring in a month and my wife and I are moving to Arizona. She wants the warmer weather. Come right this way ma’am, Major Carter.” “I’m sorry, sir. How did you know my name?” Sam asked in astonishment. “I’m Brigadier General Wright, Major.” “Oh, yes, sir.” General Wright was one of the few people outside of the SGC who knew what went on in Cheyenne Mountain. He commanded the nearby airbase and his facilities had been needed for refugees several times. He gave them a tour of the house and grounds. When he returned them to their car, Laira said, “Thank you for your kindness, General. It is a lovely home.” “My pleasure.” Sam started the car and pulled out onto the road. “Laira, what was that all about?” “I felt drawn to the house. Once we were in it, I knew.” “Knew what?” “That this will be the house that you share with Jack.” “Oh come on, Laira!” “It is just a feeling I have.” Sam shook her head.
They had a wonderful, relaxing day. Sam showed her the apartment, the Air Force Academy, and many of the other sights around Colorado Springs. As they entered the Gateroom, Laira said, “Thank you, Samantha. This was a lovely day.” “You’re welcome. Are you ready for the trip back?” “Yes, I’m tired and the baby has decided to do somersaults right now. Here, put your hand right here.” Laira guided Sam’s hand to the right side of her stomach. Samantha smiled, feeling the baby move beneath her hand. General Hammond came in to the room and smiled at the sight. He understood the confusion Jack O’Neill felt. Here were two women who should logically hate each other, and instead, they were friends. “Laira, I’m glad you could be with us today. We enjoyed having you very much.” “Thank you, General.” “If you should need us, the mining crew has a GDO to send the signal to deactivate the Iris. They will assist you, just ask.” “I will, General. Fair day!” “Fair day!” Sam took Laira back to her home on Edora. During the next six weeks, Sam went with Janet for Laira’s checkups unless she was on a mission. The times that Sam was unavailable, General Hammond accompanied Janet. He wanted to know more about Laira. As she had done with Samantha and Jacob, they quickly became friends. The amniocentesis had shown no problems with the baby, a boy, which seemed to please Jack to no end. The DNA test had confirmed that it was Jack’s baby.
Janet popped her head into Sam’s lab. “I’m getting ready to go see Laira. Are you coming?” “Yeah! Sure! I’ll meet you in the Gateroom.” Janet walked down the hall. She was concerned about Sam. Since Martouf’s death three days ago, Sam had been withdrawn and distant. She wasn’t eating very much and judging from the dark circles under her eyes, she wasn’t sleeping either. Sam wouldn’t talk to Janet about what was going on, what she was feeling. Janet was pretty sure it was because Sam was uncomfortable about Janet having been present for the second Zatarc testing. Janet had assured Sam beforehand that whatever was said in the room would go no farther, not even in her reports. While this would normally be against regulations, Janet felt comfortable listing it as Doctor/Patient confidentiality. Sam had been embarrassed about the whole situation. God knows it wasn’t how she wanted to find out that Jack cared for her. She certainly had not enjoyed having to reveal her feelings for Jack, and all of this under Anise/Freya’s watchful eyes. Janet had never liked the witch during the armband testing. Janet could have strangled her fiancé for telling Sam that Freya had made a pass at Jack. It had made Sam both angry and more withdrawn. Janet hoped that Laira might be able to help her over this rough patch. Someone needed to.
Laira and Sam sat on the bench in front of the fire. It had finally turned cold on Edora and the fire was pleasant both for warmth and to look at. Laira hoped that Sam would relax. “Janet said you had an interesting experience with some armbands that Anise wanted you to test.” Sam laughed thinly. “Yes I guess interesting could describe it.” Sam proceeded to tell her about their adventure. She did have to laugh when she described the “scuffle” at O’Malley’s. “Daniel felt so satisfied when he beat up those Marines. Usually he’s the one who gets the worst of it. It was satisfying for me to take out my guy so easily too.” “Especially when you won his money too?” “Yep, especially then!” Sam described the chewing out by Hammond, the plans for the raid and the trip to the complex. “Then my armband fell off and I passed out. Jack came back to try to get me but his fell off too. When we both came to, there was less than 2 minutes before the explosive was to go off. I tried to get Jack to leave but he wouldn’t. He just kept trying to destroy the control panel. We heard the sound of Jaffa coming down the corridor. We were standing there, looking at each other. Here we were, about to die, and I couldn’t tell him how I felt. I couldn’t tell him I loved him! I still thought about those stupid regulations!” Laira hugged her close. “Jack could read it in your eyes, Samantha.” “It still doesn’t make it any easier to take. And then there was this whole Zatarc thing.” Tears welled up in Sam’s eyes. Laira said quietly, “Jacob came by yesterday and told me some of what you went through, Samantha. I’m so sorry about Martouf. I met him several times with your father and I liked him very much. I know it was hard for you.” Sam nodded, “I’ve lost another person I care about. He asked me to kill him, Laira, and I did.” Sam started to cry. Laira held her and let her cry it out. Finally, Sam quieted. Laira said, “Jacob told me they thought you and Jack were Zatarcs. Why?” “Because of the armband situation. We had to describe what went on during the mission. The machine is looking for false memories. What we didn’t realize was that the machine was also looking at emotions. We had told what went on, but not how we felt when we were going to die. Because of that, the machine thought that we had false memories. Jack had volunteered to go through the “cleaning” procedure (for lack of a better term) while I was sedated. It was then I realized what was happening and told Janet. She stopped them just before they started on Jack. I had to explain to him what was going on and that we had to admit how we felt then. I requested that Anise retest us. That was the hardest part, having that witch Anise there.” Laira said, “Yes, I can understand that. She came here once with Jacob. I told him I didn’t like her and I don’t want her to return to Edora, ever.” Sam smiled. “I’m glad it’s not just Janet and I who can’t stand her. I stood beside Anise while she tested Jack. She asked him why he didn’t leave me and save himself.” “What did Jack say?” Sam looked at the fire, remembering. “He said, “I didn’t leave because I’d rather died myself than lose Carter.” Anise asked, “Why?” And Jack said, “Because I care for her. A lot more than I’m supposed to.” Anise verified Jack wasn’t a Zatarc. Then it was my turn. She asked me what I was feeling when Jack wouldn’t leave me. I told her that I wanted him to leave, that I didn’t want him to die. She asked me why. I said, “Because I’m in love with him.” Then Anise said, “There is something else.” This is what hurts the most. I had to admit to them that I wanted to have a baby with Jack.” Sam looked up with tears in her eyes. “This was not how I wanted to tell Jack I loved him. It wasn’t the way I wanted to find out that he cared about me. Hell, I don’t even know if I can have a baby!” “What do you mean?” “When Jolinar died within me, the Naquadah and other chemicals were released in my bloodstream. They’ve changed my blood chemistry.” “What does Janet say?” “She isn’t sure of what it has done to my reproductive system.” “Have you run tests?” “No, I figured there was no need because I refused to consider having children.”
____________
“Well you want children now. Have the tests done and find out for sure. That way you will be working from a position of strength instead of fear.” “You’re right Laira, I should. I’ll ask Janet to start them tomorrow.”
They sat there quietly for a while, just looking at the fire. “Samantha I have something to ask you. If something should ever happen to me…” “Laira, nothing is going to happen.” “Hush. Just listen. If something ever happens to me, I want you and Jack to raise the baby.” “Me and Jack?!?” “Yes, Jack is the baby’s father but he would need a mother as well. I can think of no one better to raise my son than you, Samantha. If the two of you still cannot be married, then file to adopt with joint custody. I have talked to Jacob about this and he believes it can be done that way. Jacob has my will, which specifies that request. Will you do it?” Samantha looked at her. “Yes, of course I will do it. But don’t say things like that. Everything will be just fine.” “It’s just that I’m getting one of those funny feelings and I want to be prepared.”
Sam sat there quietly. “Have you decided on a name for the baby?” “Yes, Jacob Jerran Hammond O’Neill.” “Have you told Dad and the General yet?” “No. I will tell them when they visit next.” “I like that, my father, your father, and the man that has been like a surrogate father for Jack. They will all be honored.” “I’ve become very close to your father, and I respect General Hammond greatly.”
Janet poked her head in the door. She had been doing checkups on the children in the village. “Sam, we need to get going.” “OK.” Sam and Laira rose and went to the door. Laira hugged Sam. “Be careful, Sam. Thank you. I love you.” “I love you too, Laira.” Sam walked out the door. Janet came in and held Laira close. “Thank you, Laira. She looks better already.” “I hope I helped ease her mind. Janet, please run tests on her. Make sure that she can have children.” “I will. Take care. If you need me send Garan to get the mining crew.” “I will. I love you, Janet.” “I love you too, Laira. You know, it’s funny. It’s like we are three sisters.” “Yes, except we are closer than a lot of sisters I know.” “True. I’ll see you next week.” “’Bye.” Janet and Sam walked toward the Stargate. “Janet, I want you to run the tests. I want to know for sure whether I can have a baby.” “Laira just asked me to do that. I can’t give you 100 percent guarantees but I’ll do what I can.” “Thank you.”
Sam was feeling better. The visit to Laira had helped. The nightmares about Martouf had gone away. Sam was undergoing the tests. Sam wouldn’t be able to go with Janet tomorrow to see Laira. SG-1 had a mission so General Hammond would go with her. Sam smiled. Hammond would be pleased when Laira told him about the baby’s name. She was in the control room when the Stargate activated. The “Unscheduled Offworld Activation” message came on. “Close the Iris,” she ordered. “Receiving an IDC. It’s Jacob Carter’s, and he’s transmitted the emergency medical code.” “Open the Iris,” Sam ordered. “Medical team to the Gateroom immediately!” Sam ran down the steps to the Gateroom to meet her father. Her heart was pounding in her chest. The medical team came running in the room. Janet said, “What’s going on?!” Jacob Carter came through the ‘gate with Laira in his arms. Garan and Paynan were right behind him. “She had a severe headache and then passed out.” “Get her in the infirmary now!” Janet ordered. They ran up the hall. Laira moaned, “Sam, … baby … promise.” “I promised Laira. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine!” At the door to the infirmary, Janet said, “Wait here. I’ll tell you as soon as I know anything.” Sam ran to the nearest phone and called Jack, Daniel, Teal’c and General Hammond to tell them. She walked back to her father. “Dad, what happened?” “We were sitting in front of the fire talking. She said she had a really bad headache, and then she cried out in pain and collapsed. I sent Garan to get Paynan and brought her here.” “Oh God, I hope everything will be all right.” “I know. I want a chance to play with my namesake.” Jack, Daniel, Teal’c and Hammond came running up. “We don’t know anything yet,” said Jacob. He told them what had happened. They stood around; they paced the floor, anxiety driving them to distraction. One hour passed, then two. Janet came out wearing bloody surgical scrubs. There were tears in her eyes. “Garan, Jack, everybody.” She took a breath. “Laira had an aneurysm in the brain, a big one. We were trying to bypass it when it burst.” Tears started to fall. “I’m sorry. We couldn’t do anything. We lost her.” Janet went into Jacob’s arms and sobbed. Jack and Paynan held Garan. General Hammond went to Samantha. “What about the baby?” someone said. “We did an emergency C-Section and got the baby out. He’s a little early but he’s doing fine.” They all stood there, crying. All they could do was comfort each other. In a little while, Nurse Carter came out holding the baby. “Colonel O’Neill, would you like to hold your son?” Nurse Johnson gave everyone antibacterial wipes to clean their hands. She knew they would all want to hold the baby. New life in the midst of death gave everyone hope, she believed. Jack took his son. He kissed the infant gently. “Hi there, Little Jake. I talked to your mama the other day. She couldn’t wait to see you. You are so beautiful. She can’t be here with you now, but she’s watching you from heaven.” He turned around so everyone could see the baby. “Everyone, Laira named this little one Jacob Jerran Hammond O’Neill. He’s our son.” Everyone crowded around. The tears were still falling, but hearts were eased a little with this beautiful, innocent child.
Paynan, Garan and Jacob had been given guest quarters. They were going to spend the night then Laira’s body would be taken back to Edora in the morning. Two full SG teams would carry her body as an honor guard.
Jack went into the infirmary to where a small part had been prepared as a nursery. He carried an iced tea for himself and a diet soda for Sam. She was sitting in the chair looking at Jake in his bed. “Here, you need something to drink.” Sam took the drink absently. “He’s wonderful, Jack. Laira would have loved him so much.” More tears fell from both of them. “Sam, she told you what she wanted us to do?” Sam nodded, “We raise him. Joint custody.” “How do you feel about that?” “I promised her. I keep my promises.” She looked up at Jack and then down at the baby again. “I love him, already.”
They decided to keep Jake at the mountain for the time being until the legal issues were resolved. Everyone attended Laira’s funeral two days later on Edora. Tears fell like rain, for Laira had been a wealthy woman in the manner that really counted, in the wealth of people of four worlds who loved her. Jack and Jacob went up to Garan. Jack took him in his arms. “You are my son, now. You can come back with me, or you can stay here, but whatever your decision, I will be here when you need me.” Garan nodded. “I’m going to stay here with Paynan. If I need you, I will call.” Jacob said, “Your mother became like a daughter to me. If you need me, grandson, I will be here.” “I know.” They hugged the boy, and then turned to rejoin their team. “What are you going to do, Jack?” Jacob asked. “We all got together last night and hashed it over. Laira wanted Sam and I to have joint custody. The easiest way to do that is live together, so we decided to buy a big house that the whole team can move into. We can all have our own “apartments” so to speak but still be together. I talked it over with General Hammond and he doesn’t think there will be a problem given the circumstances.” “I hope everything works out. Do you have any ideas for the house?” “Yes, actually. When Laira was here for the amnio, she and Sam stopped by General Wright’s house. Laira told Sam that Sam and I would be living there. Sam didn’t believe her at the time but Sam said the house is perfect for our needs. I’m going over to see the General this afternoon. You’re a friend of his, aren’t you? Do you want to come with me? It might make it easier.” “I’d be happy to, Jack.”
They all returned to Cheyenne Mountain. Jack and Jacob left to see General Wright. Sam and Janet went immediately to the infirmary to see Little Jake. He was sleeping so soundly; his little chest rising and falling. Sam looked at him and her heart swelled with so much love she thought she might burst. “Janet … I never thought I could feel like this. I never thought I could love like this.” Janet nodded. “Yes, amazing isn’t it? I feel the same way about Cassie. I would do anything for her, fight for her, die for her … kill for her. It doesn’t matter that I didn’t give birth to her. She is my child. Even though I love Daniel with all my heart, it can’t compare to the love I have for her. It’s so deep, so strong, so fierce.” “Yes. That’s exactly how I feel. I didn’t expect it to come so quickly and hit so hard.” “You’re a warm, loving person, Sam. Laira knew it. That’s why she wanted you to have the baby. She knew you would bond with him immediately.” “I miss her so much. I didn’t realize how much she had become an anchor in my life. We were not that far apart in age, but when I talked to her … it was almost like talking to my mom. They both had the same gentle manner, the same ability to love.” Janet nodded, tears welling up again. “Yes, I know. I could confide in her things I couldn’t even tell you, Sam. She made that connection with everyone, even Teal’c and General Hammond.” “I’m going to make sure Little Jake knows all about Laira, about how much she was loved.” Sam looked down at Little Jake, her son. “Thank you, Laira, for giving him to me. He’s wonderful,” she thought.
Jack came into the infirmary. His mission was successful. General Wright agreed to sell the house to SG-1. The General was dismayed to find out the circumstances. He liked Laira when they met that day. While Jack was looking at the grounds, General Wright talked to Jacob. “I’m surprised that your daughter and Laira seemed so close when they were here, if Laira was carrying Colonel O’Neill’s child. I mean, I’ve seen Major Carter and Colonel O’Neill together.” “That obvious to you too, Jason?” Jason Wright smiled, “Yes, and I know they’ve done nothing about it, otherwise, there wouldn’t be so much tension between them. But, how are they going to handle it living in the same house?” “They care too much about the work they’re doing to jeopardize that. I’m going to see what I can do to help them be together, Jason. My daughter deserves that chance at happiness.” “Good luck, Jacob.”
They had been lucky in their timing. The moving van was there. Another day or two and Jason Wright would have been in Arizona. The General told O’Neill they could start moving in on Monday. They agreed that the team would rent the house until the closing.
“Janet, where’s Sam?” “She’s over feeding the baby. Little Jake eats like a horse. He’s put on five ounces already.” She motioned to the nursery area, which was curtained off. Janet watched Jack walk over to the nursery, a sly smile on her face. Jack came quietly around the curtain and stopped short. He was sure that his heart had stopped and he wasn’t sure he could breathe. Sam was sitting in a rocking chair, Little Jake at her breast, nursing. She was singing softly to him. Jack O’Neill was certain he had never seen a more beautiful sight. He couldn’t believe he was watching his second-in-command, the woman he loved, breastfeeding his son. She looked so serene, so happy. Sam looked up at him and smiled. Jack’s heart turned over. “General Hammond wants to see us.” Jack wasn’t sure how he got the words out. Sam nodded. “OK, he’s just about done anyway. He’s almost asleep.” Sam looked down at the baby. “OK, little one, Mommy and Daddy have to go see Grandpa Hammond. Time for you to go to bed.” Mommy and Daddy. Jack’s heart pounded in his chest as he thought, yes, Sam was certainly Little Jake’s Mommy. Sam placed her finger on her breast at the corner of the baby’s mouth and pressed in, releasing the suction. She put Jake in bed, fastened her nursing bra and buttoned her fatigue blouse. To Jack she seemed totally unconcerned that he had seen her breast, watched her dress. It affected him greatly. He couldn’t help thinking about touching her there, making love to her. He sighed. Nothing would happen until they were allowed. It was for the best but it wasn’t easy. Sam walked over to Janet. “He’s asleep. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.” “OK.” Jack missed the wink Janet gave Sam. Sam had a wicked little smile on her face. She had enjoyed the play of emotions across his face.
As they walked down the hall, Jack managed to stammer out, “How?” Sam smiled, “Laira convinced me to have Janet run all the tests she can to see if I can have a baby. One of those tests was to see if the Naquadah in my bloodstream would be excreted in the breast milk. Janet gave me Domperidon to induce lactation. That was a few days before Laira died. The tests came back negative. My milk was totally normal. After Laira died and I realized Little Jake was now our son, I decided I wanted to breastfeed. I had Janet increase the dosage of Domperidon to what is normal for adoptive mothers who want to breastfeed.” “This is common, now?” “Yes, I read about it in a magazine.” “Wow.”
They reached Hammond’s office. “Sir, you wanted to see us?” “Colonel, Major, sit down please. I contacted JAG to find out what we needed to do legally about Little Jake. Unfortunately, there are only a few people with high enough security clearance to handle this case. Two are out of the country on assignment, one is on medical leave and the other was killed in a car accident last month. They said they might not be able to get someone assigned to it for three months.” “General, that’s totally unacceptable!” “I agree, Colonel. That’s why I contacted Admiral Chegwidden over at naval JAG, to see if they could help us out. You remember we had this same situation with Cassie and Dr. Frasier. Commander Rabb and Colonel MacKenzie will be here next week.” Sam released the breath she had been holding. “Thank you, sir.” “My pleasure, Major. You people will need to get that house set up ASAP. Make good use of the month’s downtime.” He paused and reached over to pick up an envelope from his desk. “One other thing. Everyone on base got together to give you this for Little Jake.” Jack opened the envelope and he and Sam both gasped. Within were two sets of gift certificates, $1000 to Baby Superstore and $1000 to Wal-Mart and Sears. “You two are well respected here and, God knows, the infirmary has been the most popular area on base these last few days.” Hammond chuckled. “Little Jake melted more than just a few hearts.”
Jack just sat there, astonished. “General, with your permission, I would like to make a base-wide announcement.” “Certainly, Colonel.” Jack went over to the console in the control room and flipped a switch. “Attention, please. This is Colonel Jack O’Neill. I would like to thank everyone for the generous gift to my son. I have the honor and privilege of serving with the best people in the military. Thank you.” He flipped the switch off.
They had done a lot in a week. Little Jake’s room was painted and papered. The motif was teddy bears. Jake’s, Sam’s and Teal’c’s rooms were upstairs. Daniel’s, Cassie’s and Jack’s bedrooms were downstairs. Cassie was still deciding on how she wanted to do her room. She and Janet would not move in until after the wedding. Janet and Sam had a ball deciding what furniture went where in the common areas of the house. It helped that they had all spent so much time at each other’s residences that they knew what everyone had. They moved the most necessary items first. The miscellaneous stuff would be moved over time. Sam and Daniel had to give a months notice for their apartments. Jack still had to sell his house. The move went smoothly. Given that most of them were military, they were very proficient in packing their belongings quickly.
The whole team was like a bunch of kids in a candy store when they went to the Baby Superstore. Little Jake was completely outfitted in an afternoon. Sam traded her car. It would be a lot easier to get Jake in and out of a four-door sedan than a two-door coupe. She shuttled between the house and the mountain to feed and check on Jake. She knew everyone was taking good care of him while they were getting the house ready but Sam couldn’t stay away from him for very long.
The next Monday found them all at Cheyenne Mountain waiting for Commander Rabb and Colonel MacKenzie. Sam was pacing around the infirmary like a caged tiger. “Sam, calm down! It’ll be OK! You know Harm and Mac are good people. Everything will be just fine.” “I know they’re great, Janet. It’s just that I want to take little Jake home.” Sam spent every night here, with Little Jake in her quarters. “I went through the same thing with Cassie. Just don’t worry.”
Commander Harmon Rabb and Lt. Colonel Sarah MacKenzie drove up to the gate and identified themselves. They were waived through and went to the main entrance. “Mac, I’m always amazed when I think of what they do here.” “Yeah, to actually go to other planets light years away. It sounds like science fiction.”
They met with General Hammond, Major Carter, and Colonel O’Neill in Hammond’s office. O’Neill explained the whole situation to them. “That’s everything. What do we have to do?” Commander Rabb stated, “Well, you have admitted paternity and it was confirmed by the DNA test Dr. Frasier ran. You can have custody of Jake without a custody hearing because you are his biological father. For Major Carter, we will have to file for joint custody. Adoption of a child by two unmarried people is not as uncommon as it used to be. I don’t foresee any real problem. And you can take him home with you today.” Sam breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you.” Lt. Colonel MacKenzie smiled. “We will have to interview Garan since he was Laira’s next of kin. We will also have to do the standard evaluations for Major Carter and the house. There will be a custody hearing and then the judge will consider the reports and make his decision. Janet Frasier went through the same procedure when she adopted Cassie. Obviously, this is all going to be done in a top-secret military court given Jake’s origin. Commander Rabb and I will be handling the tasks normally done by a social worker.” Colonel MacKenzie’s eyes twinkled. “Now, do you think I could go see that little charmer?” Sam sprang out of her chair. “Sure, come on! Besides, it’s just about feeding time for him.” Sam and Mac left for the infirmary.
General Hammond smiled. “One more thing, Commander. Daniel Jackson and Janet Frasier are getting married. He would like to adopt Cassie. Can you assist us with that as well?” Harm looked at O’Neill and Hammond and grinned. “What is it with the SGC and adoption? Sure, might as well since we’re here. It’ll save time since you’ll all be living in the same house anyway.” O’Neill said, “Commander, why don’t we go to the infirmary and I’ll introduce you to my son.” “Somehow, I sincerely doubt we will be able to get him away from Sam and Mac,” laughed Rabb.
Sam had settled in the rocking chair, Jake at her breast. Mac was in an armchair next to her. She looked at the happy, contented smile on Sam’s face as she looked down at Jake. A twinge of jealousy went through her heart. “What is it like? Nursing him?” “I can’t really explain it. It doesn’t hurt. It feels … wonderful. It makes me so happy.” “Oh, I really want a baby.” Sam looked at her speculatively. “Is that why you’re marrying Mic?” Mac nodded. “It’s one of the reasons, yes. Harm and I talked at my engagement party. He had expected me to wait for him “as long as it took”. Sam, I want three or four kids. That takes time and that damn clock is starting to tick really loud. I told him that night that he won’t lose that control and give in to what he wants.” “What you want, too.” “Yeah. But I can’t wait forever. Mic loves me and wants to marry me and give me children.” Sam heard Jack’s voice coming from the hall. “Here they come. Why don’t you and Harm come over tomorrow afternoon for our welcome home party? Janet called Teal’c and told him Jake was coming home. He’s arranging everything.” “Sure, we’d love to.”
“We’ll go to Edora and talk to Garan after Sam’s done feeding Little Jake.” Harm nodded. “Sounds like a good idea. The sooner we start the sooner all this is over.” They stepped to the edge of the curtain. No matter how often Jack saw Sam nursing Jake, his heart always stopped. He couldn’t stop smiling at the sight. He looked over at Harm. Harm was watching Mac caressing the baby’s hand and foot. He had a rather … pole axed look on his face. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Jack said softly. Harm nodded. He imagined his child at Mac’s breast. It sent a shiver down his spine. Then he saw the ring on Mac’s finger. The image changed, it was Mic’s child at her breast. His throat tightened. Jack saw a gamut of emotions run through Harm’s face. He pulled Harm a little farther away. Softly, so Mac and Sam wouldn’t hear, he said, “Why are you letting her marry Mic? The way is open for you. You don’t have to worry about the fraternization regs.” “I don’t get involved with co-workers. It’s a principle I have and I’ve always lived by my principles.” “Do you really want to lose her to a principle?” Harm just stood there watching, saying nothing. “Jack, he’s finished. Shall we take him with us to see Garan? I know everyone would love to see him.” “Let’s see what Janet says.” Jack went over to Janet and asked her. She considered for a moment and said, “Sure as long as he’s not near anyone with a cold and everyone uses the antibacterial wipes. His immune system is still forming. Just be sure you’re all dressed warmly. It’s cold on Edora now.”
The trip to Edora went well. Everyone congratulated Jack. Garan held Jake and cried. Jack came over and put his arms around Garan. “Laira would have loved him.” “Yes, she would have. I miss her so much, Dad.” “I know, son. I know. Are you sure you don’t want to come back with us for a while? We’ve got plenty of room.” “No, I belong here. Besides,” he grinned. “I asked Naytha to marry me last week.” “That’s great!” Jack considered Garan seriously. “You’ve grown up so much. Your mother would be very proud of you.” “Thanks, Dad.” He paused. “Aunt Samantha really loves Little Jake. I’m glad you’re both going to raise him.” “So are we. By the way, when is the wedding?” “Next spring. We’ll be sure to send you word of the actual date.” “You better!” Said Jack, ruffling Garan’s hair.
Mac watched the exchange with a smile. These were incredible people, on both sides. Mac and Harm conducted the necessary interviews. Everyone said the same thing. Sam and Jack should raise the baby. It was what Laira wanted.
They came back through the Stargate. Harm and Mac shook their heads. “That’s the most incredible experience ever. It beats anything I’ve ever flown,” said Harm, wonder in his voice. “Believe me,” laughed Sam. “It never gets old.” Jack looked at Sam. “Major, this has been fun, but let’s take our son home.” “Yes, SIR!” One of her spectacular smiles lit her face.
The next afternoon everyone was gathered at the house on the deck, enjoying the beautiful day. Harm and Mac had already done a survey of the house and given it a thumbs up. Sam and Mac were sitting in the shade beside Jake’s bassinette. Harm was “assisting” Jack at the grill. Sam watched Mac watching Harm. “Mac, in your heart of hearts, what do you really want?” “I want him. In my life, in my heart, in my bed.” “If that’s what you want, give him one more chance. You said he won’t lose control and take a chance.” “Yes. We were on the porch talking. The party was going on in the house. I thought he almost lost control when he kissed me. That kiss has invaded my dreams ever since.” “If you really want him to lose control, you’re going to have to push him over the edge. I have an idea. It’s drastic, but desperate times call for desperate measures.” “What are you suggesting?” “Do you see that stand of trees down the hill?” “Yes.” “They form a horseshoe shape with a wonderful view of the mountainside. Inside is a small meadow. It’s very private. The path in is curved so there is no direct line of sight. No one can see in. Why don’t you take Harm there.” “And?” “SHOW him what he’s going to throw away.” Mac swallowed, hard. “You mean…” Sam smiled and nodded her head. “Yes. I said it was drastic but if he doesn’t lose control then … I don’t think he ever will. If that’s the case, you probably are better off marrying Mic.” Mac sat there, looking at Harm. She looked down at the ring on her left hand. She took a deep breath and took the ring off her hand and gave it to Sam. “If I don’t try, I’ll never know. Wish me luck.” “Good luck. Oh, put your left hand in your pocket. You don’t want to make him suspicious.” Mac nodded. She got up and walked over to Harm. “Sam says that there is a view we really have to see. Come on, let’s have a look.” Harm shrugged. “Ok, why not.” Mac started walking to the stand of trees, Harm followed. Jack looked over at Sam with a raised eyebrow. Sam just smiled and shrugged. Jack had already imagined the possibilities of that particular area. It made him wonder a little about General Wright and his wife. He chuckled and walked over to Sam. “Trying to do a little matchmaking, Sam?” “I just want them to be happy. There’s no reason they shouldn’t. They don’t have to worry about the regs.” “I know. Sam, I asked Harm if he could find any way to help us.” Sam looked up at him, surprise and love shining in her eyes. Jack sat down next to her. “I want more children, Sam. Ours. I love you.” “I love you too,” she whispered. She leaned up against his body and he put his arm around her. They sat there quietly, beside their son.
Mac and Harm reached the trees. Mac let Harm take the lead. He walked almost to the edge where it fell off a little more sharply. It was a spectacular view. He started to turn toward Mac. “Mac, it’s ……….. beautiful,” he breathed. He was mesmerized. Mac stood before him, beautiful, magnificent, spectacular, totally unclothed. She slowly walked towards him. He couldn’t move. “This is your last chance, Harm. You will never have this opportunity again. You said you wanted me to wait for as long as it takes. I can’t do that, Harm. I want a family. I want children, three or four. That takes time and time is ticking away. Mic wants me and he’s willing to make that commitment.” She paused. “Can you take the thought of another man touching me?”
She drew a hand across the top of a breast. Harm drew in a breath. Mac enjoyed the feeling of power over this man. She prayed Sam was right.
“Can you take the image of me, pregnant with Mic’s child?”
She drew a hand across her stomach. A soft moan escaped from Harm. “When I leave here, that’s it. No more chances. It’s your choice, Harm.”
She turned and took a step towards her clothes. Suddenly, Harm’s hands gripped her arms and pulled her against him. “No,” he ground out. He started raining kisses down her neck and shoulder. Mac shivered. He turned her around and captured her mouth with his. Her knees went weak. Harm lowered her to the ground and stared into her eyes. “You’re MINE. You’re marrying ME. Change those damned invitations.” With that, he kissed her again. Mac’s heart soared. “Thank you, Sam.” She thought. Then all thinking became impossible.
Sam looked at her watch and smiled. It had been twenty minutes. She looked up at Jack. “I think you need to delay putting on Mac and Harm’s steaks. I think they’re going to be a while.” Jack looked down at her in amusement. “That was your idea, wasn’t it?” Sam smiled a very mischievous smile. “Sure was! Looks like it worked, too. Hey, why don’t you put all of our steaks on. I don’t think they’ll mind if we eat without them.” Over an hour later, Mac and Harm emerged from the trees. His arm was around her, holding her close. “I love you, Sarah.” “I love you, Harm.” They looked up the hill at Sam and Jack. They were sitting at the table, talking. Jack reached for Sam’s hand. Teal’c was sitting off to the side, watching them with a slight smile on his face. Daniel and Janet were on the swing, kissing. “Is there some way we can help Sam and Jack? They are so much in love.” Harm nodded. “I know. The only thing that could help them is if the SGC regulations have a loophole. Special unit regulations can supercede normal regulations, you know. I’ll ask Hammond for a copy tomorrow.” Sam smiled that mischievous smile again. “Hi guys! Did you enjoy the view?” Mac blushed. Harm laughed and said, “Yes, I have to say I did.” More seriously, he said, “Thank you, Sam. I came very close to losing what I wanted most.” He bent over and kissed her on the cheek. “You’re very welcome. You might want to put your steaks on. I would imagine you’re hungry.” Harm laughed and walked over to the grill accompanied by Jack. “OOOH, that was wicked. True, but wicked,” laughed Mac. Sam handed Mac the ring. “I think you need to give this to someone.” “Yes, thank you so much, Sam.” “No problem.”
Mac and Harm checked the SGC regulations. They couldn’t find anything to help. They gave the book back to Hammond. “Find what you’re looking for?” “No, Sir. Unfortunately not.” “Don’t worry, son. I’m pretty sure I know what you’re looking for. It’s being worked on. Just don’t say anything.” Mac and Harm looked at each other and said “Aye, Sir!” “Anything else?” “No, Sir.” “Dismissed. Oh and by the way, congratulations, you two.” They smiled. “Thank you, Sir.”
Two months later everyone gathered at SG-1’s house to celebrate the adoption decree. Everyone had gotten into a comfortable routine during that time. It really was as if they were a big family. On base, Sam and Jack’s relationship was strictly business. Major and Colonel. At home, they sounded like an old married couple. Jack yelled up the stairwell, “Honey, where are the cans of juice for the punch?” “In the pantry, of course!!” Sam yelled down with amusement. They had never broken regulations, as difficult as it was, but in every other respect they were married in their hearts. For now it was enough.
Sam brought Little Jake down and they went to the deck. Half the base was there as well as Mac and Harm, Jacob Carter, Garan, Paynan and General Wright and his wife. General Hammond requested everyone’s attention. “We are here to celebrate Sam’s adoption of Little Jake. Sam, you’re a great mother and we are all very happy for you. If you’ll give me my grandson, I have a present for you and Jack.” Puzzled but happy, she gave him Little Jake. Jacob handed her a package. Sam and Jack opened the package. Inside was a handsomely bound copy of the SGC Regulations book. Sam and Jack looked at it slightly confused, then they saw “Revised 2001” on the front. Sam noticed two post-it flags. She opened the book to the first one. Inside were approval stamps from the Joint Chiefs and the President. Then she opened the book at the second flag.
Sam and Jack read the passage.
FRATERNIZATION OF PERSONNEL
Any personnel wishing
to conduct a personal relationship with another member of the SGC are required
to have approval of the base commander. Said couple will be on two months
probation at their current assignments. To maintain the relationship, they
must conduct themselves in a professional manner while on duty and offworld.
Acceptable work performance must be maintained. After two months the relationship
can continue, up to and including marriage.
Beneath this passage was a post-it note.
You passed the test.
Just kiss her and get
married!!!!
They looked at each other and then to General Hammond.
“Thank you, Sir!!!” They said in unison. Trying to keep a smile off his face he said sternly, “Do I need to make that an order, people?!” “NO, SIR!!” With that Jack took Sam in his arms and kissed her. A loud cheer went up. Jack looked at that special smile that was his alone and said, “Sam, will you marry me?” “OH YES!!!”
