Jack had just finished the mission report and was printing it up to take to General Hammond when the phone rang. It wasn't unusual for Hammond to call him to his office, so Jack didn't think too much of it. He tucked the last page in the folder and headed down the corridor. Jack knocked before he entered and tossed the folder on the corner of Hammond's desk. He slumped down in one of the chairs that sat before the desk. He noticed that Hammond seemed shaken.

"Colonel, I have some bad news and a mission of sorts for you," Hammond said, his voice shaky.

"Sir?" Jack questioned.

"As you know Major Carter was due back from Area 51 earlier this afternoon." Hammond paused after that, as if gauging Jack's reaction.

"And she's not back on base yet," Jack returned.

"I'm afraid I have bad news. There was a car accident and she was hurt pretty bad. Dr. Frasier is preparing to move her back to the base," Hammond finished.

Jack turned away as a thousand emotions flashed over him. Suddenly every moment he and Sam had spent together came to mind.

"How bad is she? Where is she?" Jack asked.

"Calm down son. She's at a hospital outside Area 51. She's been in and out of consciousness, but she's stable for now. There was some internal bleeding, but they've got it stopped. Dr. Frasier is going to airlift Major Carter back. I want you to accompany them." Hammond stated.

"How's the....." Jack cut his sentence short when he realized what he was saying. "When do we leave Sir?"

"20 minutes. Now if that's all, you're dismissed."

Jack hurriedly navigated through the corridor to his quarters. He needed to be alone and react to everything. No one knew about he and Sam. It killed him not to be with her now, when she needed him. He cursed the regulations again before he went to meet Janet.

The flight was only about an hour, but it seemed like an eternity. When they landed at the hospital, the doctors that had treated Sam met them. They briefed while Jack went over to Sam's gurney. She looked so pale and fragile. He reached out for her, stroking her arm with his fingers. Sam's eyes opened briefly then closed.

"I'm here baby," Jack whispered to her.

He watched her closely during the flight back to the base. One question burned through his mind as he heard Janet page through the medical records. He drew his thoughts back and noticed Sam's eyes were open again. He reached out, grasping her hand. She squeezed his gently in reply.

"Doc, she's awake," he said.

Janet put the file down and checked Sam's vitals. Things were within normal ranges, considering the trauma she'd been through.

"Sam, you're on your way back to base," Janet said. Sam nodded and looked at Jack. He smiled at her, trying to reassure her.

Once they were in the base infirmary, Janet insisted upon running the full spectrum of tests again. Jack waited patiently for the results with Sam. Janet had prescribed some painkillers, so Sam had slept a good deal of the time. One of the results puzzled Janet. While it would explain a lot, it just couldn't be right. Sam had not mentioned seeing anyone since her last monthly exam. There had been no indications either. She decided to pull Jack aside and question him.

"Colonel, some of the results are a bit strange. Has Major Carter mentioned seeing anyone to you?" she asked softly.

"No," he said with a sigh.

"What is it Doc?" he asked trying to sound curious.

"I should tell Sam first," she replied.

It was an hour before Sam awoke. An hour that damn near drove Jack crazy. Then the moment came; Janet came over with her charts.

"Sam I need to ask you something. I think it be best if I talked to you in private."

"It's ok," Sam replied.

"All right, if you are certain."

"I am," Sam replied.

"You had internal bleeding when they first brought you into the hospital. There were no subsequent injuries to explain it. At first I thought there was an error in the blood work, but I ran everything again." Janet hesitated a moment. "Sam, you were pregnant. About a month along I'm guessing."

"Were?" Sam asked weakly.

"The trauma caused the fetus to abort," Janet replied.

The tears began to roll down Sam's face. Jack went pale and his eyes began to glass over with tears. He turned away and reacted the only way he could, punching the concrete wall. It was suddenly becoming painfully clear why Sam had never mentioned it to her. There was only so much that can be justified as a normal response from one who was only a friend, and Jack's wasn't.

Jack collapsed in the chair at Sam's bedside, his face in his hands to hide the tears. Sam reached out to him, grabbing his good hand and holding it tightly.

"I'm sorry, I had no idea. I'm going to recommend some down time for the both of you. Colonel, you probably broke your hand anyway. I really am sorry for you both," Janet said solemnly. "For now I would like you to get some rest Sam. Colonel, let's get some x-rays done."

Jack sighed, knowing Janet was right and kissed Sam lightly on the forehead, "Sleep love, I'll be back as soon as I can." An hour and once cast later Jack was half asleep in a chair by Sam. Janet gave up telling him to leave and brought him a blanket.

Jack woke to voices, and found that General Hammond was talking to Sam. He closed his eyes and let his black ops take over as he listened. From the sound of things, Hammond must have found out about the baby.

"Have you told the father yet?" Hammond asked. "I can arrange to find him if you'd like."

"He knows already," she replied.

"How did he take it?"

Sam looked at Jack's hand, "Not very well."

"I see. I'm sure you're both going to need some time to recover. When the Colonel wakes up I'll arrange things with him. Just one more thing Major, are you and Jack going to try for another baby?" Hammond asked.
