As much as she wanted to, Sam couldn't dismiss the fish. She couldn't dismiss the knowledge that something had changed. Because if that one little thing had changed, how much else had without their knowledge?
If there were fish in that pond, what else had been added or removed from their line of reality? What other influences had been altered by their interference all those years ago? Obviously, in their original time line (and could you really call it that, because really, this was the original for their current reality)Sam had been a member of the SGC, and an important member of SG-1. But the little things, like the fish. Were they still the same? Had her cat been taken through the wormhole in that other reality? Had she managed to get the new carburettor for the Volvo at the discount price? Had she saved blown up a sun in that other dimension? And more importantly, like in every other alternate reality, had she and Jack given in to their feelings?
Her brain, relaxed by a week of vacation, began to ponder at this puzzle, trying to fit together all the possibilities of alternate universes and just what could have happened.
Two days later, she got a migraine.
"It's not all that surprising, Sam." Daniel chided her as he handed her two tablets and a glass of water. "We told you to stop worrying at it, but you just had to keep thinking." He smiled, touching a hand to her forehead, then left her in the darkness of the bedroom, closing the door behind him with a soft click. Sam took the tablets quickly, trying not to think or open her eyes too wide in the dim soft darkness.
"I can't help it." She said quietly, with a smile – despite the pain. "It's like this puzzle. Irresistible. I mean, we knew that alternate realities existed. Daniel figured that one out years ago. But here, with that video, we have an exact representation of just how easy it is to diverge into different realities. Those four people, their reality has continued on without their SG-1. Or at least, that's what I think would have happened, according to all known physics. But then, they went backwards in time – so theoretically, we are them. But each choice they made, each choice they were offered would have made a different reality again. So before… ouch." Sam put her hand to her head, wincing as the migraine peaked once again. She heard a soft chuckle and felt a gentle, warm hand guide her back onto the bed.
"Stop thinking." Jack chided her, putting the cool wet cloth back onto her forehead. "You'll make yourself sick."
Sam laughed softly, then moaned as her head exploded into dazzling lights. "Don't make me laugh." She grumbled, curling up around her husband.
"Sorry, dear." Jack replied. She fell asleep to the feel of his hand stroking through her hair, his soft breath the only noise she cared to listen for.
