Sad and strangely an ode to survival. Dying so that some parts of him can stay in tact. Dying as a testament to his love for Carter as well as to save his friends and the world. Understandable? Yes! Necessary in this case? Yes, in this case - but not as a lifestyle choice! Unfortunately, Jack underestimates the importance of his own survival in saving and enriching the life of others - especially those he cares about. Death and retirement cannot be the only options.
Having said that - great story! I enjoyed it.
