"Sir?" Major Samantha Carter asked her CO Colonel Jack O'Neill.

"I wish you wouldn't do that." He mumbled.

"Do what sir?" She asked.

"Smile at me and say sir in that tone."

"You don't want me to smile at you?" She said questioningly.

"Yes. Make that an order." He replied.

"Okay sir. I'll just be going then." She got up from the table and left him to his own devices.

Sam entered the briefing room and took her usual place next to Jack.

"Morning Sam." Daniel said as he looked up from his notes.

"Good morning Daniel" She shot him a huge smile. "Did you manage to translate that tablet?"

"Yes. It appears to be the history of their people. They…"

"Ah!!" Jack yelled. "Wait until Hammond gets here." Sam stared at him with a blank face.

"Teal'c I've almost finished that solar powered battery charger for Rya'c. It should be finished by the time you next go to visit."

"Thank you Major Carter." Teal'c bowed his head slowly.

"Why does Rya'c need a battery charger?" Jack asked.

"I have purchased a portable DVD player for him, but batteries are not available in the Land of Light."

"Teal'c wants to introduce Rya'c to the wonderful world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Daniel added.

"I'll lend him my Simpson's DVD. The kid should learn about Earth humour." Sam would have normally smiled at a comment like that but she adopted a Teal'c type stoic look. Daniel shot her a questioning look, she replied with a 'don't ask' look.

"Alright people let's get this briefing started." General George Hammond took his seat at the briefing room table. "Doctor Jackson if you'll begin."

Daniel began the briefing, Jack made random comments, and Sam sat quietly, she occasionally shot Jack a questioning look but said nothing.

"Major Carter was there something you wished to say?" General Hammond asked.

"Sir, only that the UAV didn't show any life forms in a 10 click square radius of the gate. But I thought it was inappropriate to interrupt as it would be in direct breach of an order."

"And what order would that be?" Hammond asked.

"I was ordered not to smile at Colonel O'Neill and not to say sir in a tone of voice, as I was unsure what tone he meant I thought it best to keep quiet General."

"Colonel, would you care to explain?"

"Carter was bugging me and she kept saying sir in that patronising tone, which means she really thinks I'm crazy and she'd better check I meant what I said. Then she smiles pretending to be all sweetness and light, it was bugging me so I ordered her not to."

"Colonel, with all due respect, the last time I said sir I was checking you were okay. We were discussing a report you had due and you spaced out on me. I was worried." Sam explained.

"Major I'm overruling Colonel O'Neill, you're allowed to smile at him and call him sir in a patronising tone when appropriate, but please try and restrict the laughter at his jokes it just encourages him."

"Yes sir." Sam bit her lip.

"Hey." Jack protested when he realised what had just happened.

"Colonel if you can contain yourself we have a briefing to finish."

"Yes sir."
