Sam stood in the kitchen drying up some of the breakfast plates. It had been at least three hours since she'd found out she was pregnant. She didn't know whether to be excited or afraid. It was only a few nights ago that she and Jack had discussed having children, and that it would be better to wait for a while. It had been Jack's idea to wait a while, he had given her the impression that he didn't want to be a father again anytime soon.

She felt tears welling in her eyes. Why did this have to happen now, she had been so careful when taking her birth control pill.

"Penny for them?" Jack said behind her, making her jump.

"Jack," she scolded, "don't do that."

He reached out to touch her shoulder. "Honey, you OK?"

"Fine." She smiled slightly. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"You've been quiet all morning, I'm just worried about you that's all."

"Jack," she took a deep breath. "I need to tell you some---"

"Hi guys, that was a great breakfast, I didn't know you could even cook Jack." He looked from one to the other. "You two OK?"

"We're fine Daniel." Sam smiled at him.

"Good," he said, backing out of the kitchen, feeling Jack's eyes on him.

When he'd gone, Jack looked at her. "You were going to tell me something."

"Doesn't matter," she said softly, losing her nerve.

He moved forward to place his hands on her shoulders. "You sure?"

Nodding, she moved forward to wrap her arms around him. He drew her into a long embrace, feeling her warmth wash over him.

"Don't you two ever stop?" came a voice from the doorway.

They looked up to see Jacob Carter smiling, his arms folded. His smile almost split his face in two. "Jack would you put my daughter down for one minute while I say goodbye to her?"

Sam moved from Jacks arms. "Dad, you're not going already?"

"I have to sweetheart, duty calls."

She moved to his waiting arms holding him close to her. "But you just got here."

"I know, but I'll be coming back this way soon I promise." Jacob pulled her to arms length and held her face in his hands and smiled. "I am so proud of you Sam, do you know that?"

Sam felt tears spring to her eyes as she nodded. She didn't want him to go, not yet, not without him knowing. "Do you really have to go?"

"Afraid so, I wish I could stay longer but you know how it is." He leaned down and kissed her forehead. "I love you sweetheart."

"Love you too Dad."

Jacob looked over at Jack and smiled. "You look after my little girl you hear?"

Jack came over and shook his hand "I promise I will."

"I know you will. I'm so happy for both of you."

He moved away from Sam to leave. They both followed him out. Just before he left he gave Sam another hug. "You are going to have to tell General Hammond about you two soon. You won't be able to keep your relationship a secret forever."

"We know that dad." Sam sighed heavily. "We just want it to be just us for a while, that's all."

"I know." He kissed her head again then walked over to his car, or more precisely General Hammond's car. Sam watched him as he drove away, hugging herself as the sadness swept over her again. She felt warm arms embrace her from behind, and a soft kiss planted on her head. "Come on, lets say goodbye to Daniel and Teal'c, then we can talk, OK?"

She nodded against him, still looking at the empty car space that her father had just left.

"We'll see you guys later?" Daniel asked.

Sam looked up. "What's happening later?"

"We thought that maybe we could go out to a club tonight, you know dinner, dancing. Daniel grinned at her.

She couldn't help but smile. Jack placed a hand on her shoulder. "No stealing my girl this time Danny boy, get your own!"

Sam started giggling into her hand. She remembered the last time they all went out, just after she had started seeing Jack. Daniel had asked her to dance not knowing that she was already with Jack.

"I promise you Jack I'll bring my own this time!" Daniel grinned.

Sam raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Anyone we know?"

"Maybe." He blushed slightly.

Smiling, Sam turned to look at Jack. "Janet."

"What, umm,--" Daniel was stuttering. "How did you, um I mean..."

"Yes Sammie, how did you know?" Jack tightened his arms around her waist, and began tickling her side.

She squealed, trying to get out of his arms. "OK, OK," she conceded.

He let go of her. "Well?"

"Janet told me," she admitted, smiling. "You know us girls we tell each other all our little secrets."

"Oh I see." He advanced on her again.

"Jack," she said shaking her head, backing away from him.

"You tell each other everything?" He pressed her against the wall.

She was giggling as he pinned her to the wall so she couldn't escape. "Well," she said softly, wrapping her arms around his waist. She knew she had him now. Just one soft whisper in his ear turned him to putty in her hands.

"Well?" he asked, catching his breath as she kissed his ear.

"Well, I don't tell her everything." Sam grinned. He smiled down at her, his voice husky as he leaned in close to capture her lips with his own.

Daniel looked away embarrassed as his two friends lost themselves in each other. He gave Teal'c a look to see his reaction, to see the Jaffa with a small smile on his face.

"Well listen you guys, we're gonna go," Daniel said as he pushed Teal'c to the door. "See you later," he said again not sure if they'd heard him. Teal'c followed him out quietly closing the door behind him.

Inside, Jack finally let his lips part from Sam's. She looked up at him and smiled.

"So?" he said softly, placing his forehead against hers.

"So?" she asked.

"You wanted to tell me something?"

She disentangled herself from him and took his hand. "I did." She smiled. "I do."

"Is it good?"

"It's wonderful," she beamed.

"Am I gonna like it?" He smiled.

She moved a hand to his face to caress his cheek. "I really hope so Jack, I really do."

Jack looked at her questioningly as she took her hand from his face to hold onto his arm.

"Give me your hand Jack," she said, all the time watching his eyes. He did as she asked, watching her take his hand to guide it down her body until his palm rested on her stomach.

It took a few moments until it registered what she was trying to tell him. His eyes followed the path of his hand, then back up into her eyes.

"Oh God," he whispered, his eyes brimming with tears.

"Yes," she nodded, happy tears falling from her eyes.

He suddenly pulled her into a fierce hug, his body shaking with tiny sobs. When he finally released her, the kiss he placed on her lips was soul shatteringly beautiful. "I love you so much Sam," he whispered.

"I love you," she said as a sob caught in her throat.

"This is so great," he beamed. Then all at once a strange expression came over his face.

"What?"

"I'm afraid honey that we're gonna have to tell Janet." His face broke out into a huge smile which she found infectious.

"I guess we will."

Later that night, Daniel sat with Janet and Teal'c watching the door. Everytime it opened he looked up.

"Will you relax?" Janet smiled.

"Sorry," he mumbled into his drink. Janet squeezed his arm to get his attention.

"Why are you so nervous?"

"I'm not," he protested.

"Course you aren't." She smiled, noticing that Jack and Sam just walked in through the door. She waved frantically to get Sam's attention.

Sam spotted her straight away and pulled Jack by his hand in their direction.

"Hi guys," Sam beamed happily.

"Teal'c, you OK there, buddy?" Jack asked, sitting next to his friend.

"I am extremely well O'Neill."

Jack patted his arm. "Glad to hear it."

"So," Sam smiled at Daniel and Janet, "you two are- you know?"

"Yep," Janet smiled back.

Daniel looked down at the floor not knowing what to do when Janet reached over and took his hand. It didn't take him long to recover though as he placed an arm around her shoulder pulling her to him.

"So Daniel, have you told Janet about today yet?" Sam smiled sweetly.

"Today?" he said softly, "umm no."

"You haven't? Daniel, I thought you would have told her," Jack put in.

"Told me what?" She looked from one to the other.

She never got a chance to find out before Jack grabbed Sam's hand and led her to the dance floor.

Teal'c got to his feet "Doctor Fraiser, I would be honoured with this dance."

Janet smiled and took his hand. She looked back at Daniel. "Be back soon."

Teal'c returned Janet back to Daniel after the song ended. She smiled, slightly out of breath. "Thank you Teal'c."

He nodded.

"Where's Sam and the colonel?"Janet asked.

"Look." Daniel pointed her in the right direction to see Sam and Jack engaged in what she could only describe as a deep kiss, if you could call what they were doing kissing. More like mouth to mouth.

"I knew it," she squealed in delight.

"Sam said she hadn't told you," Daniel said, slightly confused.

"Listen Daniel." She smiled, nuzzling into his arms. "I knew about Sam and Jack even before they did."

She was interrupted by another person at the table "Hello, do you mind if I sit with you I'm meeting someone?"

"Graham, what are you doing here?" Janet asked, surprised to see him.

"Of course you can join us." Daniel smiled at him, motioning for him to sit.

He sat down gratefully, his eyes wandering the crowd. "I was meeting a few of the--" He stopped mid sentence as his eyes locked on Jack and Sam, his mouth almost dropped to the floor.

Janet followed his gaze to see that thankfully they had stopped their lip locking session to dance very closely instead.

"Is there a problem, Lieutenant?" she asked.

"Um no," he stammered, "no, no problem."

Teal'c surprised them all by turning to Graham and giving him a quiet friendly warning. "I hope you will respect the major's and colonel's privacy in this matter."

"Yes, sure I will."

"Good."

When Jack and Sam finally made it back to the table, Janet took Sam's hand. "I need the little girl's room, come with me."

"OK," she laughed.

They hadn't been in two seconds when Janet proceeded to question her. "Well come on," she beamed, "I want details."

"Janet." Sam smiled. "Can't a girl have any secrets?"

"No." Janet smiled, then placed a hand on Sam's arm. "Especially when the girl's pregnant." She saw Sam's shocked look. "You are, aren't you?"

"How did you?"

"I am a doctor Sam, and I've noticed your sickness too." She smiled. "So how far gone are you?"

"I don't really know. I took a home test today."

"Well then when was your last period?"

Sam shook her head grinning. "Two months ago."

"TWO MONTHS," Janet said more loudly than she intended, hurriedly lowering her voice as some women looked their way.

"Yeah, two months, that's OK isn't it?"

"I wish you would have told me sooner, we're gonna have to get you checked over." She smiled at Sam "Congratulations."

"Thanks." She smiled, as she hugged her friend.

When they emerged from the washroom, Jack pulled Sam down to sit beside him. "I was beginning to think I'd have to send a search party out to you."

"Ahh." She leaned over to kiss him soundly. ''Did you miss me?''

"Always."

Jack smiled at Janet as she winked at him "Congratulations."

"Thanks." He smiled, pulling Sam into a hug.

"Whoa, wait a minute, did we miss something?" Daniel asked.

"Sorry Daniel." Jack smiled happily. "Sam and me are having a baby."

Over to their left, Graham spat his beer all over the floor, the shock showing on his face. Daniel's mouth gaped open, then broke into a huge grin.

"We're having a baby, this is so great, a baby." He immediately pulled Sam into a hug and slapped Jack on the back.

"This is good news O'Neill, I am very pleased for you and Major Carter." Teal'c smiled.

"Thanks Teal'c." Jack grinned. "It's the best news."

"Um yes, congratulations," Graham stammered.

"This calls for a drink to celebrate." Daniel beamed happily.

"Not for us Daniel,"Jack said, as he saw Sam stifle a yawn. "You have one for us, it's been a long day. I'm gonna get Sam home before she falls asleep."

Sam smiled from her seat next to him. "I'm sorry guys, I guess pregnancy is more tiring than I thought."

"It's natural Sam." Janet squeezed her arm. "I want to see you in the morning remember."

"She'll be there Janet."Jack nodded as he pulled Sam up by her hands.

"See you tomorrow everybody," Sam beamed.

"Yeah, bye Sam." Daniel smiled.

Sam looked at Jack, a wave of dizziness coming over her. She grabbed hold of his arm trying to steady herself.

"Whooah." He caught her. "Honey you feeling all right?"

"I need to sit down," she said weakly.

"OK," he said softly in her ear helping her to sit. He looked up at Janet worriedly. "Is this normal?"

Janet was with Sam in seconds, feeling her head. Looking up she had a frown on her face. "I want to get her to hospital just to check her over."

"If you think it's best, Janet." Sam breathed sharply.

"What?" Jack said, louder than he intended to.

She smiled up at him. "Will you stop worrying?"

"How can I? I love you."

"I know you do." She held his hand. "I love you too."

Janet felt herself with a huge smile on her face. She had known for some time that they loved each other. She took pride in the fact that she knew a long time ago. "Come on Sam, let's get you to the hospital." She smiled, helping to lift her friend.

The hospital waiting room was busy with people. There were many other expectant fathers pacing up and down. Jack nervously looked around the room. He felt a warm hand on his. Looking down he saw a woman in her early forties smiling at him. "Is this your first baby?"

He couldn't help but smile. "This is my second, but our first."

"You looked a little worried sat there. It took me back to when I had my own children." She smiled at him. "I shouldn't worry, babies have a way of frightening you to death."

"You can say that again." He laughed. "How many children have you got?"

"Just the two," she said softly. "They're both grown up now."

"Yeah?"

"Yes, my Mark and Samantha, my beautiful babies all grown up now having children of their own."

"Colonel you can see her now," Janet called from the door. Jack turned around to speak to the woman at his side but there was no-one there. He felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle.

"You OK?" Janet asked worriedly. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Maybe I just did Janet," he said quietly looking around. "Maybe I just did."

Janet watched him puzzled. She thought she had heard him talking to someone, but wasn't sure. She watched him silently as he walked past her still looking around the room.

"You sure you're OK?"

Turning to look at her he nodded, then followed her out of the room.

The hospital room was dimly lit when Jack quietly opened the door. Janet ushered him inside then left them alone.

Sam smiled up at him sleepily when he came in. Walking over to her he sat on the side of the bed and leaned over to place a kiss on her lips. "Hey baby, how're you feeling?"

"I'm just tired that's all. I've got to stay overnight and have a scan in the morning." She stroked his hand.

"Is everything all right? Is the baby OK?" he asked worriedly.

"Everything's fine, I'm very anaemic. I need a scan to see how far gone in pregnancy I am."

"You sure?"

"I'm sure." She smiled, moving over in the bed. "Lay with me Jack."

He did as she asked and laid down beside her. He heard her breathing slow into a steady rhythm. She surprised him when she spoke up. "Jack?"

"Yeah?"

"I think my mom was with me today."

He looked up sharply at her face, she appeared to be sleeping. He felt the uneasy feeling again as he had done earlier in the waiting room. The woman had looked like Sam, she had Sam's eyes, she, nahh couldn't be, could it? Did he just have a coversation with Sam's dead mother?

The conversation warred in his head until sleep finally claimed him. Tomorrow they would talk about it. As they slept a woman stood in the shadows smiling contentedly, at last her little girl was happy.
